Kalani edges Mililani to reach OIA final

By Paul Honda on January 22, 2019

For 24 minutes, the Lady Trojans of Mililani looked the part of a league champion. The Kalani Falcons simply persisted. On a night when shots weren’t falling and there was scarcely an offensive rebound to be seen, the Lady Falcons rallied in the final quarter for a 38-34 semifinal win over Mililani on Tuesday night at Radford. On Thursday, No. 4 Kalani will meet No. 9 Kahuku for the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I championship, again on Radford’s pristine hardwood […]

Kamehameha claims ILH girls soccer title in shootout

By Nick Abramo on January 22, 2019

When a professional golfer has an unspectacular day, with mostly pars, maybe a birdie or two and a bogey or two, writers can be quick to call it a “ho-hum” round. Those words are perfect for Tuesday’s ILH girls soccer championship match. Kamehameha won the title after a scoreless regulation and overtime by outshooting ‘Iolani 2-1 on penalty kicks. Even the PKs were lackluster. Of nine shots, only three went in the goal. Three were saved and three went wide. […]

Kamehameha (14-5, 7-3 Interscholastic League of Honolulu) posted wins on the road last week over Punahou (54-25) and then-No. 3 […]

Punahou’s Tamatoa Falatea stands out at Poly Bowl

By Christian Shimabuku on January 20, 2019

Perhaps the Polynesian Bowl, a high school football all-star game that matches the best Hawaii has to offer with the rest of the nation’s top talent, was made for players like Punahou’s Tamatoa Falatea. Falatea was selected to the game due to his production on the field for the Buffanblu. In his senior season, he caught 74 passes for 1,057 yards and 11 touchdowns en route to Star-Advertiser All-State first team honors at wide receiver. Despite the numbers, Falatea says […]

LB Daniel Heimuli, WR Puka Nacua earn MVPs at Poly Bowl

By Paul Honda on January 20, 2019

It was a maulers’ night in the trenches, but the most outstanding players of the Polynesian Hall of Fame Bowl turned out to be rangy and even balletic. Daniel Heimuli, an uncommitted linebacker out of Menlo Park (Calif.) with torpedo-like finishing ability, was named the most valuable defensive player of the all-star game. His Team Mauka lost, 27-7, but he was seemingly everywhere in and out of the box, including a fast-closing sack of Team Makai quarterback Gunner Cruz. He […]

By Nick Abramo on January 19, 2019

Aiea ran an almost unthinkable gauntlet to hoist the OIA girls soccer championship trophy. Na Alii (12-2) finished their run to the title Saturday night with a 1-0 upset of Pearl City at Kaiser Stadium. It was the fourth straight win in the tournament for Aiea, which had dispatched Kahuku and Kaiser before going into the semifinals Thursday as a decided underdog against 17-time league champion Mililani and coming away with a 1-0 win. Team defense got it done that […]
