By Billy Hull on January 30, 2019

ILH champion ‘Iolani, which has reigned as the No. 1 team in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10 for 10 consecutive weeks, is the top seed in the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships. Brackets were released Wednesday with BIIF champion Waiakea seeded No. 2 after ending four-time defending state champion Konawaena’s run of BIIF titles that extended for the last decade. The Warriors will host the winner between Kalani and Radford next Thursday while the Wildcats will host Leilehua in a […]

Ethan Wright saves Kapolei’s 32-game win streak at buzzer

By Paul Honda on January 29, 2019

It’s all about roles and timing right now for the red-hot Kapolei Hurricanes. Ja’Shon Carter struggled from the field against a relentless Mililani defense, but he knew his job in the final seconds. After coming up with a steal, Carter and the ‘Canes worked the clock to set up the final shot in a 38-all game. His attempt in the lane, smothered by defenders, gave him no chance for a clean look. The ball squirted out and teammate Ethan Wright […]

No. 1 Maryknoll not surprised by success

By Billy Hull on January 29, 2019

Kelly Grant didn’t hesitate when asked if his No. 1-ranked Maryknoll boys basketball team has exceeded expectations after losing three All-State Fab 15 players to graduation. “Not at all,” the Maryknoll head coach said. “I’m not going to take anything away from last year’s seniors but this group right here — their basketball IQ is really high. When you have 6-foot-3 (players) across the board and a 6-foot-7 guy (Marcus Tobin), we can break down a bit and still recover and […]

Punahou wins ILH title with convincing win over ‘Iolani

By Nick Abramo on January 29, 2019

A rout is rare in the Punahou vs. ‘Iolani boys soccer rivalry, but that’s what happened Tuesday at the Buffanbu’s rainy field. Punahou (9-1-2) rolled to a 4-1 victory to capture its second straight ILH Division I championship and third in four years. The Buffanblu are hoping this success translates to the upcoming D-I state tournament. They’re gearing for a fight, especially since last year’s exit was an early one. At the end in 2018, two Neighbor Island teams — […]

Q&A: Kahuku sophomore standout Leiah Naeata

By Paul Honda on January 29, 2019

The Lady Raiders of Kahuku never wavered. The ups and downs made them stronger as they rose to capture the Oahu Interscholastic Association girls basketball Division I title last week with a 63-59 win over Kalani. Leiah Naeata surpassed expectations all season, capping it with a 33-point, eight-rebound, seven-assist performance against Kalani. Coach Latoya Wily saw her team, especially returnees like Naeata, transform after a postseason loss to Moanalua last year. “I know that was one of her biggest games […]

STATE GIRLS SOCCER DAY 1: Pearl City romps

By Billy Hull on January 28, 2019

Five different Chargers scored goals as Pearl City romped Kapolei 5-0 to open the first day of The Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Girls Soccer State Championships on Monday. Both Oahu teams that traveled off island were victorious as Mililani knocked off Hilo 2-0 and Campbell shut out Kamehameha-Maui 1-0. Two-time defending state champion ‘Iolani handled Moanalua 3-0 at the Raiders’ field. The OIA runner-up Chargers (11-2-1) led 1-0 at halftime on a goal from Jasmine Herodies and added four second-half goals […]

‘Iolani rises to No. 2 as showdown with No. 1 Maryknoll nears

By Paul Honda on January 28, 2019

There are no trap games in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys basketball gauntlet. None, nada, zilch. Zero is no hero for ILH coaches, who have gained a few white hairs over the course of a fan-pleasing, drama-filled season on the hardwood from top to bottom. Maryknoll remains at the top of the Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10 today with nine of the 11 first-place votes cast by coaches and media. Maryknoll (22-2, 8-1 ILH) led all teams for the […]

By Paul Honda on January 28, 2019

The ‘Iolani Raiders remain at No. 1 for a 10th consecutive week in today’s Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10. ‘Iolani (20-6) completed its Interscholastic League of Honolulu season on Saturday, defeating No. 3 Kamehameha 60-48 for the title. The season-long No. 1 status for ‘Iolani is a rarity for any program. The Raiders are likely to be the top seed when the Hawaii High School Athletic Association reveals the seedings, pairings and brackets for the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships […]
