Kaulana Makaula’s return helps spoil ‘Iolani’s senior night

By Paul Honda on January 31, 2019

Never mind win-loss records and rankings, even the standings. Punahou-‘Iolani lived up to the rivalry heat again on Thursday night, and the visiting Buffanblu welcomed back a teammate who might just be their most valuable player. Kaulana Makaula returned from a football visit to Southern California — when Punahou lost games to St. Francis and Maryknoll — to score 11 points while providing his arsenal of defensive skills as the Buffanblu outlasted the host Raiders 50-44. “We haven’t lost more […]

Blas leads Konawaena to seismic upset of ‘Iolani

By Nick Abramo on January 31, 2019

Konawaena pulled off a seismic upset of ‘Iolani in the Division I quarterfinals of The Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Girls Soccer State Championships on Thursday at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Wildcats survived, 2-1, after regulation and two overtimes, thanks to a 5-4 advantage on penalty kicks to vanquish the two-time defending champion Raiders. Kyanah Blas‘ fingertip save of Sasha Asselbaye‘s hard shot in the second overtime kept her team in it, and then Blas made a big stop on […]

Leopoldo sidelined as Farrington admin investigates complaints

By Paul Honda on January 31, 2019

Farrington boys basketball coach Steven Leopoldo remains sidelined, temporarily removed as head coach as the school administration investigates complaints filed by parents, according to two parents who did not want to be identified. Leopoldo was contacted by the Star-Advertiser, but declined to comment. Farrington athletic director Harold Tanaka and principal Alfred Carganilla did not respond immediately to requests for comment. Leopoldo’s squad had just lost its first game, at Kaiser, in the Oahu Interscholastic Association East season after seven wins […]

Seabury Hall’s Gangnath is Gatorade runner of year

By Nick Abramo on January 31, 2019

Seabury Hall’s Chloe Gangnath is the Gatorade Hawaii girls cross country runner of the year, the Gatorade Company announced recently. The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character. The 5-foot-7 senior won the state meet in the fall with a time of 19 minutes, 20.73 seconds, a meet record and 47.46 seconds ahead of the next closest competitor. The Spartans finished in sixth place as a team. In addition, Gangnath went undefeated in the […]

Glenn Flores is Campbell’s interim baseball coach

By Nick Abramo on January 31, 2019

Glenn Flores is Campbell’s new head coach for baseball on an interim basis, athletic director Rory Pico confirmed Thursday. The position opened up when Pico left the post to become the Sabers’ AD last fall. Flores, who is also an assistant athletic director, was an assistant under Pico for seven years. “He has a lot of knowledge about not only the team but also the administration, so it made sense to choose him from the baseball staff,” Pico said. “He […]

Hoopbook: Kamehameha-Mililani opens with elimination match

By Paul Honda on January 31, 2019

The pairings and bracket for the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball Division I State Championships released on Wednesday night are nearly duplicate to last year’s template. The layout posted here at Hawaii Prep World a few days ago had Lahainaluna as the No. 2 seed instead of Waiakea, the most obvious difference. Also, Maui reached the tourney as the MIL’s runner-up instead of King Kekaulike. As always, there’s at least one potential gangbuster in the quarterfinal round. This season, it’s going to […]

Mules, Cougars prepare for inter-island travel

By Paul Honda on January 31, 2019

Life on the road can be fun and it can be frazzled, particularly during the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships. The Leilehua Mules learned from a state-tournament trip to the Valley Island in 2017. They flew in on game day and departed that night. In between, they lost a heartbreaker to Kamehameha-Maui, 33-31. A busy school day. A short flight. A long drive Upcountry (Pukalani). A long drive back to the airport. Back on the plane. Then a drive from […]

Hawaii Prep earns No. 1 seed in state boys soccer

By Billy Hull on January 30, 2019

Hawaii Prep drew the top seed in Division I in The Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Boys Soccer State Championships. It’s the first time a school from outside Oahu has been awarded the top spot. Brackets were released Wednesday night. Ka Makani shared the title with Baldwin last year after a scoreless draw. The Bears are unseeded after losing the MIL to King Kekaulike and would meet Hawaii Prep for the rematch in the semifinals should both teams advance. The MIL champions […]
