Lone senior Connor Malinger sparks Eagles to 3rd D-II title in 4 years

By Paul Honda on December 6, 2021

Connor Malinger tried running for his school team back in seventh grade. It was 2016. Five years and an eternity ago. “In seventh grade, I thought the season would never end. I had never gone to so many practices for so long. Cross country was definitely the most draining sport I had ever played,” said Malinger, now a member of two of Hawaii Baptist’s boys cross country championship teams. The senior ran the treacherous, cold, muddy course at the Honolulu […]

By Paul Honda on December 6, 2021

In the most difficult of conditions, a three-peat performance was epic for the girls of Hawaii Baptist Academy. At HBA, the “Chariots of Fire” theme song doesn’t play every morning on the intercom, but maybe it should. The Eagles’ growth in cross country over the years continues to peak. Not even the coldest, muddiest state championship meet in recent memory could stop them. When the HBA girls and boys arrived at the Hawaii Preparatory Academy campus on a rainy Saturday […]

Big plays, big ‘D’ spark No. 1 Kahuku in 33-7 semifinal win over No. 9 Waianae

By Paul Honda on December 4, 2021

Sterling Carvalho didn’t like what he saw sometimes on the synthetic turf of Skippa Diaz Stadium. In Kahuku’s 33-7 semifinal win over Waianae, there were 419 combined passing yards by Jason Mariteragi and Waika Crawford. That’s a like. Kainoa Carvalho continued his sensational season with nine receptions for 166 yards, including an 85-yard screen pass for a TD. Another like. Kahuku’s defense was in vanilla mode early on as Waianae established some rhythm with Kolu Quisquirin-Sabagala and the ground attack. […]

Cloudy, foggy conditions, plus wet, 57-degree temperatures — it was 55 for the earlier boys’ race — greeted the field of 200 female harriers at the hilly Hawaii Preparatory Academy campus in Waimea. Just a few miles away, snow capped the summit of Mauna Kea. Ford is a strong two-sport athlete […]

By Paul Honda on December 4, 2021

The wind and rain of Waimea was named by the ancient Hawaiian people as Kipu‘upu‘u, which is known for its strength, beauty, the shivering cold, as well as poetic references to its violent nature. The most challenging course in the state and today it will be the ultimate test. pic.twitter.com/w4lymLsYsf — HHSAAsports (@HHSAAsports) December 4, 2021 Kaimana Cantere of Maui edged Benjamin Zerr of Kalaheo by sixth-tenths of a second to win the boys individual race at the Honolulu Marathon/HHSAA […]
