The 2019 class ended up with six four-star recruits according to the final 247sports rankings with Punahou’s Marist Liufau entering the group after his commitment and signing with Notre Dame. There were 23 3-star players in the final rankings. While Saint Louis’ Faatui Tuitele and Kahuku’s Enokk […]

Liufau ready to continue Punahou-Notre Dame pipeline

By Christian Shimabuku on February 6, 2019

Punahou’s reputation at Notre Dame precedes Marist Liufau . Fellow Buffanblu products Robby Toma and Manti Te’o both chose the Irish and starred in South Bend from 2009 to 2012. Most fans will remember Toma as a sure-handed receiver and Te’o as a clutch linebacker who finished as the Heisman Trophy runner-up during his senior season. No defensive player has placed that high in the voting ever since. “It’s an honor just being able to follow in their footsteps while […]

LIVE BLOG: 2019 National Signing Day

By Billy Hull on February 6, 2019

The early signing period for prep football players in December has taken away some of the luster from February’s National Signing Day. In Hawaii however, there are still a couple of big recruiting decisions to be announced. In addition to the Education 1st Signing Day event at the Elks Club on Wednesday morning, Kahuku’s Enokk Vimahi and Kamehameha’s Lokahi Pauole, the top two uncommitted prospects left in the class of 2019 from the islands, will make their signing day announcements […]

Polynesian Bowl helps Kaulana Makaula’s USC dream come true

By Christian Shimabuku on February 6, 2019

Kaulana Makaula always knew this day was going to come. He just didn’t envision it with him covered in cardinal and gold. But on Wednesday morning at the Elks Lodge in Waikiki, the Punahou senior put pen to paper, making his commitment to Southern California official on a scholarship offer made less than two weeks ago. “It’s truly a dream come true. It’s a great experience to sign with my fellow classmates and future teammate, Maninoa (Tufono),” Makaula said. “Signing […]

Kahuku’s Enokk Vimahi hopes to set trend at Ohio State

By Nick Abramo on February 6, 2019

Kahuku offensive lineman Enokk Vimahi signed to play with Ohio State on Wednesday morning at the Red Raiders’ gym. Prior to Wednesday, Vimahi — who had 27 offers — had his choice whittled down to the Buckeyes, Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Southern California. He is the first Hawaii recruit to choose Ohio State in recent years. “We have a saying here, be uncommon,” said Enokk’s father, David Vimahi, an assistant coach at Kahuku. “He could have definitely gone to other […]

Kamehameha OL Lokahi Pauole signs with UCF

By Paul Honda on February 6, 2019

It’s not common, not at all, for roughly $1.4 million worth of scholarships (and financial aid) to be in the same room from the same high school on a tiny island. Among the seven signees at the letter-of-intent ceremony at Kamehameha Schools on Wednesday morning: offensive lineman Lokahi Pauole, the Star-Advertiser All-State performer. The 6-foot-4, 290-pound senior signed with UCF, joining Mililani standout quarterback Dillon Gabriel. “Florida’s so far away from home, but it felt like home, especially with Dillon […]

Hoku Arias as alert and aware on an early Wednesday morning. Early rise and shine time is nothing new for the Kamehameha senior. Signing with the University of Hawaii as a preferred walk-on, that’s new. “I feel that from the coaching staff and everyone over there. They believe I can go out there and make a big difference first year starting out,” Arias said. The letter of intent signing ceremony at Kamehameha on Wednesday morning featured seven athletes.
