By Billy Hull on February 7, 2019

St. Francis’ first season in Division I in ILH boys basketball will be its last, and the Saints have shown they belonged. The two-time defending Division II state champions defeated visiting Mid-Pacific 57-44 on Thursday in the ILH tournament. St. Francis moved up a division to compete with the state’s best before the school announced in January it would close from grades 7 to 12 after the academic year. Kalani handles BIIF champion Waiakea to reach semis

By Paul Honda on February 7, 2019

Kalani’s 73-57 win over Waiakea on Thursday night wasn’t shocking, but the domination the Lady Falcons demonstrated was. Kalani (21-6) advanced to the semifinal round of the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships and will meet Kamehameha at Stan Sheriff Center in a showdown between the runners-up from the OIA and ILH, respectively. Waiakea, the BIIF champion, fell behind 9-2 and was never in the game despite a lot of hustle and effort. The Warriors didn’t utilize their tough fullcourt press […]

Lahaina’s Kawehi Gillcoat attempts to match Estrella

By Jerry Campany on February 7, 2019

As hard as it was to believe last year, this year it is even more remarkable. Kainalu Estrella of Lahainaluna finished his league season with the first MIL slam since before 1980 last year. Just a year later, something that hadn’t been done in at least 38 years might be accomplished again as Kawehi Gillcoat goes for his fourth MIL crown. Gillcoat won at 113, 122 and 140 pounds and will likely be at 140 again this year. Like Estrella, […]

Jahnea Miguel leads Baldwin’s chances at MIL repeat

By Jerry Campany on February 7, 2019

Last year the Baldwin girls wrestling team dismantled Lahainaluna’s MIL dynasty. This year they hope to build one of their own. The Bears, who took six gold medals and beat the Lunas 198-174 for the MIL title on their way to the state crown in 2018, begin defense of their league title on Saturday at King Kekaulike. It was the first time a school had as many golds as Lahainaluna in the MIL championships since KS-Maui had four to the […]

Kamehameha could threaten wins record at ILH championships

By Jerry Campany on February 7, 2019

Go ahead and take 10, Kysen Terukina. The Kamehameha junior can earn his surname’s tenth ILH championship on Saturday in his home gym, easily more than any other family has produced in the last quarter century. A Terukina has risen to the top step of the podium in each of the last six years, with Kysen following Blaysen (four titles) and Shayden (three). The next most successful ILH surname in the last 25 years is Vincent, Terao, Hoshino and Oshiro […]

Kamehameha’s Ashley Gooman goes for ILH slam

By Jerry Campany on February 7, 2019

Teshya Alo‘s 2016 Kamehameha girls wrestling team gets better and better every year. Ashley Gooman, who was a freshman on that team, can add to that team’s lore on Saturday with a fourth ILH title, joining Alo and Zion Grace Vierra as members of that squad to eventually go on to complete the ILH slam. There are only six Warriors to do it, and three of them toiled in the same wrestling room not so long ago. Other Warriors to […]

Moanalua clinches state berth in win over Roosevelt

By Paul Honda on February 6, 2019

After 10 wins in a row, including a 71-59 quarterfinal win over Roosevelt on Wednesday night, Moanalua coach Byron Mello was not quite pleased. “I like the grit we showed tonight. With what we had on the line, I wanted more effort,” Mello said moments after Moanalua clinched its 11th trip to the state tournament in the last 14 seasons. “I’m proud of our guys, but we need better practices. If we play this way on Monday (against Kahuku), it’s […]
