Maryknoll leans on resilience of ace Justice Yamashita

By Paul Honda on April 2, 2019

He doesn’t say a whole lot with words, but Justice Yamashita certainly knows how to figure out a problem or two. The Maryknoll senior found himself in a jam against Pac-Five on Tuesday night. After leading by five runs, the Spartans saw the Wolfpack cut the lead to two, 9-7. As usual, the right-handed ace kept his wits and kept working. Yamashita finished with four strikeouts and just one walk issued as the Spartans held on for a 10-7 win […]

Punahou softball wins its 10th in a row to take over ILH lead

By Paul Honda on April 1, 2019

The spirit of a winning team can be complex. Catcher Liana Heshiki knows this well, so she aims to be consistent on and off the field. Heshiki went 4-for-4 and drove in five runs as No. 2 Punahou extended its winning streak to 10 games on Monday, rallying past No. 4 ‘Iolani 10-4 at the Buffanblu’s middle field. It was a bumpy ride, though, as the visiting Raiders scored four runs on four hits, with help from a Punahou error, […]

A nine-game winning streak has Punahou tied for the lead in the ILH — for now — and ranked No. 2 in this week’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10. The good news might not last long however as the Buffanblu host ILH co-leader ‘Iolani this afternoon with the winner taking over sole possession of first place. The Buffanblu began the year No. 1 after an impressive preseason run, but began league play with losses to Maryknoll and Mid-Pacific. A 9-3 win over ‘Iolani […]

Neighbor islands hold top two spots in baseball top 10

By Paul Honda on April 1, 2019

Each of the last two years have ended with neighbor-island teams in the state final and in the top two spots of the final Honolulu Star-Advertiser Baseball Top 10. So it should be no surprise that this week’s Top 10 features the same two teams — Baldwin and Waiakea — who met in the 2018 state final. Yet it is, kind of. Although teams from Maui and the Big Island have dominated the state tournament in recent years, this is the first […]
