‘Iolani came together for one memorable softball state title

By Billy Hull on May 5, 2019

Watching the Datahouse/HHSAA Softball State Championships in Division I was like watching a prize fight. Game after game, two teams would slug away at each other, only in this case, it was by dumping balls over the outfield fence at record pace. In 11 winners bracket games, 36 homers were hit, more than doubling the previous mark. In the final however, one team put it all together — pitching, hitting, defense — for one of the most complete and convincing state-championship performances […]

Q&A: New Mid-Pacific boys hoops coach Robert Shklov

By Paul Honda on May 5, 2019

It is no surprise that the Mid-Pacific Owls like what Ryan Hirata did over the last five years as boys basketball coach. When Hirata returned to his alma mater, ‘Iolani, this spring, the logical move would be to promote assistant coach Robert Shklov. Mid-Pacific made it official on Friday afternoon, hiring Shklov as head coach. Shklov played at Punahou and joined Hirata’s staff at MPI five years ago. The Owls lose some key seniors to graduation, including point guard Colin […]

Saving their best for last: Punahou stuns ‘Iolani for state title

By Paul Honda on May 5, 2019

Two powerhouses, one throne. Punahou made up an impressive amount of ground in a span of two weeks, emerging from the runner-up spot in the ILH to state champion for an eighth year in a row. In the process, Coach Rick Tune’s team tipped over the mighty machine of ‘Iolani, which had played superlative volleyball, particularly while sinking Punahou three times late in the ILH season. The Buffanblu’s 25-16, 24-26, 25-19, 25-22 victory over top-seeded ‘Iolani wasn’t a shock. It […]

TRACK UPDATE 4: KS-Hawaii’s Chenoa Frederick pours it on for 4 titles

By Nick Abramo on May 5, 2019

Kamehameha-Hawaii’s Chenoa Frederick had herself quite a weekend, laying claim to four individual events in the Island Movers/HHSAA Track and Field State Championships in rainy War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku, Maui. Frederick, who took the long jump (18 feet, 2.75 inches) on Friday, added the 100-meter dash (12.56 seconds), triple jump (38-7) and high jump (5-1) to her gold-medal stash Saturday. “I absolutely love this weather,” she said with drops of rain water beading on her forehead. “I’m from Hilo. […]

Punahou water polo wins 12th straight, shows no signs of stopping

By Brian McInnis on May 4, 2019

The inner fire of Punahou cannot be quenched in this water-based sport. Just look at Buffanblu coach Ken Smith, the 72-year-old who was a relatively young man (61) when this run of state water polo championships began in 2008. Smith nimbly leaped into the Kamehameha pool Saturday night with a push-assist from his players after they made it 12 straight for the program —— and 14 out of 16 since the Stanford Carr Development/HHSAA competition began — with an 11-3 win […]

Noah Wusstig works his way to state judo slam

By Christian Shimabuku on May 4, 2019

Noah Wusstig’s road to historic territory wasn’t as easy as he made it look. The Moanalua senior took home his fourth consecutive HHSAA judo title on Saturday evening with an ippon of Kapolei’s Grayson Ferreira in the 145-pound finals, which lasted 37 seconds. But in between Wusstig’s coronation at the Stan Sheriff Center and his two other individual state titles in wrestling was plenty of sacrifice, along with the pressure that came with heightened expectations. “It’s been really hard. I […]

Faith Joy Okubo leads Moanalua to state repeat in judo

By Christian Shimabuku on May 4, 2019

The Moanalua girls also took home their respective team title for the second year in a row with 84 total points. Punahou was in second with 53 points, followed by Mililani’s 52. “For the first one, it was so special last year that we didn’t know if we would have this opportunity again so to get it back-to-back, it was super special for our team and they worked so hard for it,” Moanalua girls coach Derron Maki said, who is […]
