By Nick Abramo on May 18, 2019

Three-sport athletes making the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Hall of Honor used to be a common thing. Not so much these days. The Hall of Honor started in 1983 and four times between then and 1999 there were eight or more three-sport athletes inducted. The discrepancy between three-sport athletes and one-sport athletes was wide in the following years: 1985 (8-1), 1987 (7-0), 1989 (6-0), 1991 (9-0), 1993 (9-0), 1994 (7-0), 1995 (7-1) and 1999 (9-0). In 2015, there were […]

Ratio of girls to boys in Hall of Honor has increased through the years

By Nick Abramo on May 18, 2019

It used to be that the Hawaii High School Athletic Association’s Hall of Honor inducted more boys athletes than girls. It’s trending the other way now. A graph put together by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s and Hawaii Prep World’s Jerry Campany illustrates the change. In 1983, the first year of the Hall, there were nine boys athletes and three girls picked in the 12-member class. That’s a long way from from 2018, when the numbers were exactly reversed, with nine girls […]

Forty seasons ago, in 1979, Radford went unbeaten through the regular season and state tournament, only the second program to do so in state history. The Rams defeated ‘Iolani 7-4 in the […]

Longest-running state streaks through 2018-19

By Brian McInnis on May 15, 2019

Eleven team title streaks in state competition came to an end in the 2018-19 athletic calendar, but many endured and others more were created. After the dust was settled in the final competition this month, Punahou still owns the four longest active championship streaks in all HHSAA sports — girls tennis (17 straight years), girls water polo (12), boys volleyball (eight) and girls cross country (seven). However, the Buffanblu had a lengthy one, girls golf, snapped at six years at […]

Pac-12 school showing interest in ‘Iolani WR Carter Kamana

By Paul Honda on May 15, 2019

There is nothing concrete yet in Carter Kamana’s future. But it’s beginning to crystallize bit by bit. The 6-foot-3, 180-pound junior has been contacted by a number of Mountain West Conference football programs. On Tuesday, a Pac-12 Conference recruiter came calling on the ‘Iolani campus. Kamana, who had 85 receptions for 959 yards and eight TDs last season, was busy in class and didn’t meet with the coach. There are plans to connect later, however. “I don’t have any offers. […]
