PHOTO GALLERY: 2019 Hawaii Hall of Honor

By Paul Honda on June 4, 2019

From Faatui Tuitele‘s invocation to Felipe Ojastro‘s mostly polite interrogation of the 12 inductees to Kalina Obrey‘s outgoing thank-you message on behalf of the class of 2019, it was a memorable night. There was also Manti Te‘o‘s earthy speech, chock full of wisdom for the soon-to-be college athletes. When it was all done, the inductees stayed together, signing autographs for each other, yearbook style, on anything they could get their hands on. The Star-Advertiser Hall of Honor pages. Nam, who recorded eight top-12 finishes in tournaments this season, helped USC win seven tournaments including both a Pac-12 and NCAA regional championship. Nam also made the All-Pac-12 first team and was named a second-team All-American after finishing third on the Trojans with a 72.57 scoring average. She had four finishes in the top seven of a tournament and […]

Roosevelt’s Tyler Morimoto thrives as a three-time Special Olympics world gold medalist

By Nick Abramo on June 3, 2019

Being a Special Olympics athlete and a varsity athlete is not a common combination. But it is Tyler Morimoto‘s combination. Morimoto, 17, won three gold medals at the Special Olympics World Games, but that incredible haul tells only a sliver of who he really is. Morimoto is autistic and he has ADHD. He is also what is called “high functioning.” That is not surprising when you realize he has a 3.3 grade-point average at Roosevelt and when you speak with […]

VIDEO: Punahou alum and NFL linebacker Manti Te‘o speaks at Hall of Honor event

By Paul Honda on June 3, 2019

Before he took the stage to close the 2019 Hawaii Hall of Honor banquet, Manti Te‘o spent a joyful few moments greeting outgoing high seniors. Some, like Punahou’s Duke Clemens and Saint Louis’ Faatui Tuitele, are inductees to the ’19 class. Others, like Punahou’s Marist Liufau — who is heading to Te‘o’s college alma mater, Notre Dame, and Maninoa Tufono, are alums of Punahou. Like Te‘o. A longtime sportswriter asked Te‘o, a 2009 inductee into the Hall, about his speech […]

KS-Hawaii ace Tai Atkins, ‘Iolani slugger Micah Yonamine lead All-State baseball

By Paul Honda on June 2, 2019

Tai Atkins didn’t want to leave his hometown. In Kapaau, life is slower, family is close by and, according to Atkins, there is nothing better. But prior to seventh grade, his family relocated to Mountain View, moving from one corner of the island to another. He grew there, attending Kamehameha-Hawaii, developing his talent on the baseball diamond. Atkins’ senior year saw a pinnacle, sparking his Warriors to the BIIF Division II title with an unbeaten record that included wins over […]

20 YEARS LATER: The Hawaii Hall of Honor class of 1999

By Nick Abramo on June 1, 2019

One major leaguer with two World Series championship rings. One Olympic silver medalist in water polo. One University of Hawaii volleyball superstar. St. Anthony baseball player Shane Victorino, Punahou water polo player Brandon Brooks and Kamehameha volleyball player Lily Kahumoku are just three of the 12 members selected to the 1999 Hawaii Hall of Honor. It was 20 years ago now and a fine time to look back at that banner year for the Hall of Honor. The Class of […]

VIDEO: ‘Iolani’s softball state champions

By Paul Honda on June 1, 2019

A season of brilliance doesn’t always end with a state championship. No, there is so much talent spread across the islands that sometimes the crown is earned by the team that puts together the best balance. In 2019, that also required unparalleled power hitting. The ‘Iolani Raiders bashed their way to their first state title in 19 seasons, and four of their starters landed on the Star-Advertiser All-State first team. Pitcher/outfielder Aleia Agbayani was voted player of the year, and […]
