The Junior Rainbows of University Lab School have all it takes to win basketball games. The only question is, will there be enough left in the tank to beat Kailua on Saturday. ULS advanced to the title game of the Surfrider Holiday Classic with a 60-49 runaway win over No. 10 Campbell. The Jr. ‘Bows’ second win over the Sabers in a four-day span was a close game in the first half before they went on a 16-2 run before […]

By Paul Honda on December 1, 2023

University Lab coach Ryan Tong has seen a lot of basketball in his years as a Junior Rainbow player, then assistant coach, then head coach. Like minds think alike, and when he succeeded former teammate Walt Quitan to oversee the boys basketball program, expectations were still high. Low-key high. Don’t mind the Jr. ‘Bows for getting just a wee bit excited after stunning No. 1 Saint Louis in overtime, 67-64, on Thursday night in the opening round of the Surfriders […]

Kamehameha, Maryknoll advance to I Mua semifinals

By Paul Honda on December 1, 2023

Over the weekend, family took the court when Kamehameha visited Maryknoll. Kamehameha coach Pua Straight led her Warriors to a hard-earned 44-33 win over Maryknoll coach Chico Furtado and his Spartans. Niece versus uncle. It was a way of life in the brutally competitive ILH Division I girls basketball universe — until this season. Maryknoll’s decision to move down to Division II meant D-I Kamehameha would possibly never play the Spartans. So the nonconference game was set up for last […]
