By Billy Hull on June 18, 2019

Kolten Wong and the St. Louis Cardinals got a second shot at Miami Marlins rookie right-hander Jordan Yamamoto on Tuesday. Not much was different. The Saint Louis School alumnus continued his mastery of the Cardinals to begin his MLB career, tossing seven scoreless innings for the second time in a row against St. Louis to earn the win. Yamamoto allowed two hits and two walks and struck out seven, blowing a fastball past Yadier Molina to end the bottom of […]

The Big Island Interscholastic Federation released its football schedule Tuesday, the last of Hawaii’s five leagues to do so. The master schedule of all five leagues can be seen here. It’s still missing some nonleague games. Seven of the BIIF’s 11 teams are slated to play one nonleague game each. One team — Kamehameha-Hawaii — has three nonleague contests scheduled. Mater Dei closes week at ‘Iolani summer league 3-5

By Paul Honda on June 16, 2019

With or without their top players, the Mater Dei Monarchs have made summer journeys to Hawaii an annual ritual. The 2019 trip has been, at times, quite a struggle. Splitting their varsity team in two, the Monarchs were 0-4 in the first two days of competition at the ‘Iolani Summer League and finished the week a combined 3-5. Mater Dei’s Varsity 1 squad lost to Team Shimamoto, a team of seniors and recent graduates, on a buzzer-beater by Cole Arceneaux. […]

Fiva Tulafale’s dominance sparks Waipahu in upset of Saint Louis

By Paul Honda on June 15, 2019

Sure, it’s 7-on-7, where there is no pass rush. Where Saint Louis, with the state’s best pass rushers, can’t line up and tee off. Yet, it was Waipahu’s tremendous defensive force, Fiva Tulafale, who stepped up in a 28-22 win over the Crusaders at the Los Angeles Rams 7v7 tournament on Saturday. So many questions. Is Tulafale an interior defensive lineman, edge rusher, linebacker or safety? The answer is yes. Waipahu could use him in every possible way this fall, […]

Sophomore Blaine Hipa’s progression leads Campbell to 7v7 title

By Paul Honda on June 15, 2019

Blaine Hipa is better today than he was yesterday, that’s for sure. Hipa showed flashes of brilliance as a freshman last fall at Campbell. In the eight months since, the lanky southpaw has filled out his frame with some muscle. More so, he has become efficient with his progression from the pocket. It showed on Saturday when he tossed five touchdown passes in a 30-20 win over talented Mililani in the final of the Los Angeles Rams 7v7 tournament at […]

VIDEO: Hilo coach Kaeo Drummondo on LA Rams 7v7 tourney

By Paul Honda on June 15, 2019

Free clinic, overnight stay and transportation paid for. It was an offer Hilo coach Kaeo Drummondo didn’t expect. His answer to the organizers of the Los Angeles Rams 7v7 tournament was an emphatic yes. It was the same for Kapaa and Lahainaluna. Hilo won the Division I state title in 2017 and finished second in ’18. Lahainaluna is a three-time D-II state champion, and Kapaa was the D-II runner-up. “It was too good an opportunity to pass up,” Drummondo said. […]

By Billy Hull on June 14, 2019

Seven different football prospects from Hawaii committed to Division I schools in the last week, choosing to end the recruiting process early and enjoy the rest of the summer. Arizona State became the third Pac-12 school to land a commitment from Hawaii as Kahuku’s Micah Soliai Howlett announced his commitment to the Sun Devils on Thursday. Soliai Howlett, who is 6-foot-4 and 280 pounds, also had offers from Fresno State, Hawaii, Navy, Nevada, Syracuse and UNLV. He was named to […]
