Kaimuki drops out of OIA girls basketball schedule

By Paul Honda on January 1, 2022

After three forfeitures to begin the OIA regular season, Kaimuki’s girls basketball team is off the league schedule. The recent revision on Dec. 30 shows no remaining games for the Bulldogs. They forfeited games against Moanalua (Dec. 23), Kalani (Dec. 28) and Kahuku (Dec. 30). Lack of players has hindered the program in recent seasons. This year, the program was down to four players after one student-athlete opted to play soccer instead. Kaimuki isn’t the only girls basketball program struggling […]

Kapaa’s massive offensive line does the job to bring the 1st state football title to the Garden Isle

By Jonathan Chen on December 31, 2021

Stormy conditions at Farrington’s Edward Skippa Diaz Stadium on Thursday night created the perfect playground for Kapaa’s gargantuan trench Warriors. Behind the offensive line, Kapaa ran all over Kamehameha-Maui in a 61-7 blowout win in the Division II title game of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships. Kapaa rotated players along the offensive line, but a bulk of the action went to the primary combination of senior tackles Kawika Rogers (6-6, 300 lbs) and Santana Hernandez-Martinez (6-1, 220), senior […]

Solomone Malafu’s two-way excellence sparks Kapaa to 1st state football title

By Paul Honda on December 30, 2021

Not that the top-seeded Kapaa Warriors needed any help. Just to make sure, near perfect conditions — no rain or wind at Skippa Diaz Stadium — began to go awry at kickoff when Kapaa and Kamehameha-Maui on Thursday night just as a Kapaa video operator noticed and said, “Nice weather tonight.” By the middle of the second quarter, it was a torrential downpour, blowing east to west rather than the usual mauka-to-makai. Dropped snaps. Fumbles. Bad snaps. Almost all by […]

Ties to Wags: Kapaa’s Mike Tresler, KS-Maui’s Ulima Afoa on D-II state final

By Paul Honda on December 30, 2021

Mike Tresler. Ulima Afoa. Bob Wagner. The ties between the three coaches — two matched up in the Division II state final, one long retired — are part of an intriguing final week of the Hawaii high school football season. The longest ever, and one that players, coaches and fans are grateful for. That includes the Kapaa Warriors have been here before. Kamehameha-Maui’s path was often walled off by MIL dynasty Lahainaluna. The teams battle at Farrington’s Skippa Diaz Stadium […]

Makenzie Alapai’s 17/16 double-double powers No. 5 Kamehameha over Damien

By Paul Honda on December 29, 2021

Not one, not two, not three or four. Five injuries hit the Kamehameha Warriors starting in the offseason and through preseason. Somehow, coach Pua Straight and her squad are making the best of it. The Warriors overpowered another depleted team, Division II powerhouse Damien, 55-38, on Wednesday night at the Lady Monarchs gym. Each team suited up just seven players, but the Warriors have been in ironwoman mode. Makenzie Alapai, a freshman, had 17 points and 16 rebounds to ignite […]

Rising Monarchs of Damien lean on scoring, energy of Theresa Anakalea

By Paul Honda on December 29, 2021

Theresa Anakalea did all she could in the midst of the pandemic. Training at distant corners of Oahu while commuting from Waianae. Drills with her Damien teammates in driveways, parks and, eventually, gyms. After averaging 24 points per game as a freshman, the talented scholar-athlete was on a path to some historic numbers. That stopped with the cancellation of the 2020-21 winter season. “She never took a break. When the parks were closed, she would do dribble drills at home, […]
