Class certification ruling in Title IX lawsuit nears

By Nick Abramo on September 23, 2019

A hearing was held Thursday in U.S. District Court on the merits of certifying a lawsuit filed by three Campbell athletes as a class-action case. If Judge Leslie E. Kobayashi eventually rules to certify it as a class action, the number of plaintiffs would increase to all present, future and potential female student-athletes at Campbell. The suit alleges gender-based bias and unequal treatment of female athletes and it was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union Hawaii chapter in December. […]

Q&A: Kamehameha coach Chris Blake on Durango Classic, ILH 2nd round

By Paul Honda on September 23, 2019

More than a decade has passed since the Kamehameha Warriors first played in the Durango Classic. Mid-season travel to Nevada. Disruption of class attendance. Returning to the islands with some jet lag, fatigue and within 48 hours, a key ILH match. Coach Chris Blake wouldn’t have it any other way. The Warriors placed 10th in the 64-team field in Las Vegas. There were plenty of study halls guided by Blake, a longtime teacher at the school. There was rest time, […]

HAWAII GROWN: Pearl City alum Sunshine Fontes a ‘key’ part of UCLA soccer’s future

By Brian McInnis on September 23, 2019

In a perfect world, Sunshine Fontes would’ve played in front of family and friends in two of her first college soccer games with national powerhouse UCLA last week. Alas, that was not to be, as the Wahiawa native is still recovering from a knee injury she suffered during OIA tournament play as a Pearl City senior earlier this year. But Fontes, a two-time Star-Advertiser player of the year, was at Waipio Soccer Stadium to cheer on her fifth-ranked Bruins teammates […]

RANKINGS: Punahou makes it a clean sweep for No. 2

By Billy Hull on September 23, 2019

The race for No. 2 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Football Top 10 this season has been fascinating from the opening week. Punahou started the season ranked second and held the spot for two weeks before Mililani edged past the Buffanblu with wins over Campbell and Kahuku. The Trojans kept their No. 2 ranking for a month, but the two teams split their second-place votes evenly among the 10 voters last week and finished in a tie for the first time. […]

Campbell’s Jonan Aina-Chaves hits career rushing milestone

By Billy Hull on September 23, 2019

After playing for two years at St. Francis, running back Jonan Aina-Chaves was forced to transfer schools for his senior season. The only returning Star-Advertiser All-State first-team selection to find a new home in the offseason, Aina-Chaves got off to a slow start for Campbell but has picked it up over the last three weeks. The 5-foot-8, 180-pound workhorse averaged less than 50 yards rushing a game before a recent three-game winning streak by the Sabers in which he has […]
