By Billy Hull on October 1, 2019

The Punahou girls volleyball team will return to the state tournament after an eternity away by Buffanblu standards. A 25-14, 26-24, 25-18 sweep of Mid-Pacific on Tuesday coupled with No. 3 ‘Iolani’s 25-22, 25-23, 25-19 sweep of No. 2 Kamehameha clinched Punahou’s first berth in the state tournament since 2014. The five years between appearances at states is the longest drought for the school since it missed the dance from 1982-85. The Buffanblu won it all in 2014 and were […]

Coaches Corner: Comparisons of Waipahu RB Alfred Failauga to Marshall Faulk and more

By Paul Honda on October 1, 2019

In many ways, he is just a kid from Waipahu who likes Fortnite, hanging out with friends and tries to keep on top of his academics. In the eyes of coaches around the OIA and ILH, Alfred Failauga is a creature who is capable of destroying the most well-crafted game plan. Failauga is the state’s all-time leading rusher with 5,549 yards in 37 games. He ranked seventh coming into the season, and in seven games played so far, he is […]

Coaches intrigued by idea of OIA-ILH alignment in girls volleyball

By Nick Abramo on September 30, 2019

Mililani volleyball standout hitter Falanika Danielson was asked recently if she liked the OIA’s new five-set format. Her answer gave a clear picture that the league’s competition is out of balance. “I like playing five sets, but I would rather play five with teams that have the same level,” she said. “It gets draggy. I’m not trying to downgrade anybody, but sometimes matches end with lopsided scores like 25-8, 28-9, 25-8.” In the ensuing dialog, Danielson brought up an idea […]

Saint Louis remains No. 6/No. 7 in national rankings

By Billy Hull on September 30, 2019

Margin of victory hasn’t had an effect on the Saint Louis Crusaders’ national ranking. A six-point win over Punahou 10 days ago that was decided in the final minutes didn’t hurt the Crusaders, nor did an impressive 54-21 thumping of Mililani on Friday help Saint Louis’ standing among the best teams in the nation. The Crusaders remain No. 6 in the USA Today Super 25 and No. 7 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 this week. St. Frances Academy (MD) is […]
