Q&A: ‘Iolani defensive playmaker Lanakila Pei

By Paul Honda on November 5, 2019

Whether it’s early or late in the season, ‘Iolani senior linebacker/safety Lanakila Pei has often shown a knack for making the big play. He did it again in a tie-breaker battle with Damien with a Division I state-tournament berth at stake. Pei came up with a forced fumble at the goal line, knocking the ball loose from Damien quarterback Jake Holtz. Later, he returned a fumble 18 yards for a TD as ‘Iolani hung on for a 21-14 win. >> […]

Saint Louis QB Jayden de Laura adds 2 big-name offers after WSU commitment

By Billy Hull on November 3, 2019

When Saint Louis quarterback Jayden de Laura gave an oral commitment to the Washington State Cougars last month, it seemed like the end of the recruiting process. De Laura, despite never losing a high school game as a starter, had to wait until October to receive his first offer from a Power Five school. A day later, he rewarded that offer with a commitment to head coach Mike Leach and the Cougars. Things remained quiet for a few weeks, but […]

Defending state champion Lahainaluna will await the winner between Roosevelt and Kamehameha-Hawaii to begin its defense in the state Division II football tournament. The Lunas will host the winner of that game on Nov. 23. The Lunas have played a state tournament game at home twice and won both, beating Kaimuki 7-0 in 2015 and Roosevelt 48-10 last year. Kamehameha-Hawaii, which hosts Roosevelt on Nov. 16 for the right to travel to Maui, has not been nearly as successful on […]

Composure in clutch was Saint Louis’ ace in the hole

By Nick Abramo on November 1, 2019

No. 1 Saint Louis was seven little points better than No. 2 Punahou on Friday night and so it was no joke when coach Cal Lee said afterward that the Crusaders are fortunate to be where they’re at. Where they’re at is 36 victories in a row and in prime position to go for a fourth straight Open Division state championship. Had they not kept their composure when the going got super rough in the second half at Aloha Stadium, […]
