No Emmitt, no Crocker, but Sacred Hearts and Baldwin dazzle

By Nick Abramo on November 9, 2019

Some people in the crowd Saturday had that look of hope when the emcee called out the presence of Emmitt Smith, Gov. David Ige, Betty Crocker and former Gov. Ben Cayetano. It was a joke to break that dull period between the end of bold athletic performances and the announcement of the final scores at the Blaisdell Arena. And when the scores trickled in, two teams with high hopes to win the competition got what they were looking for. Sacred […]

By Paul Honda on November 8, 2019

Big Blue seems to love the islands. He tweeted the news on Friday morning. “Thankful to receive my first BIG 10 full ride scholarship to the University of Michigan,” Mokiao-Atimalala wrote. HAWAII GROWN: Punahou alum Wayne Taulapapa fueled by fumble in 2014 state final

By Nick Abramo on November 6, 2019

Imagine rushing for 260 yards and three TDs in a state championship game. Wayne Taulapapa did that in 2014. Now imagine that you fumble in that same game, ending your team’s last chance at a comeback in an eight-point loss. Taulapapa can check off that box, too. But it has made him a better man. After rushing for 3,279 yards and 52 touchdowns in three years as a Punahou starting running back, Taulapapa went on a two-year church mission in […]

Nerdpod: The unique talents of Damien QB/hoopster Jake Holtz

By Paul Honda on November 5, 2019

He could be the tallest quarterback in Damien history. Jake Holtz, at 6-foot-3, close to 6-4 and 215 pounds, has been more than a statuesque passer from the pocket. Holtz’s passion and toughness make him a playmaker unlike the usual signal-caller. His athleticism makes him a threat on the basketball court, too, where he has the hops to play in the post, but has the skill level to play in the backcourt. Whether he chooses one sport or both in […]
