Andrade-Tomimoto hit two huge shots in the clutch, scoring four points in the final 34 seconds. The winning shot began with Punahou inbounded from the baseline at its basket with 11 […]

Out of the shadows, Leilehua WR Jonathan Vasquez steps up at JPS Senior Bowl

By Paul Honda on December 8, 2019

Maybe this was the last touchdown catch of Jonathan Vasquez’s life, but it probably won’t be. There just aren’t that maybe 6-foot-2, 195-pound pass catchers with the body control, deep-ball skills and focus that he has. Maybe this is just the first chapter in a new book for the Leilehua senior. Playing in a defensive, almost tortuous (for fans of offensive football) demonstration of might by Team Liberty, Vasquez stepped up in a large way on Friday night. He hauled […]

Playing in the Commanders contest, Motoyama’s versatility was in play. The Trojan running back/slotback had five receptions for 26 yards in a battle dominated by […]

Twin brothers Josh, Caleb Matagi relish their head-to-head JPS Senior Bowl battle

By Paul Honda on December 7, 2019

Three sacks later, Joshua Matagi was excited. After Team Freedom rallied for a 12-6 win over Team Liberty, he was satisfied. The Farrington senior had a night to remember at the JPS Senior Bowl Classic Commanders game. His twin brother, Caleb (5-10, 245), lined up at right tackle for Team Liberty. The two squared off for one series — Liberty’s lone scoring drive for a 6-0 lead midway through the fourth quarter. He tried, but Josh Matagi (5-10, 225) didn’t […]

By Nick Abramo on December 7, 2019

Get Nainoa Machado the ball and chances are he will do something with it. The 6-foot, 195-pound Waianae wide receiver did something that’s quite difficult to do in this day and age. Despite being on the losing team, he won the MVP award in the first game of the JPS Senior Bowl Classic doubleheader Saturday night at Aloha Stadium. Machado caught eight passes for 88 yards and scored all three of Team Liberty’s touchdowns in a 23-21 loss to Team […]

The Raiders found their answers in the second half, turning a two-point halftime lead into a 41-32 win over No. 6 Punahou in the ILH regular-season opener for both teams. Jovi Lefotu scored seven of her game-high 18 points during a 12-5 run to begin the second half. “Punahou was knocking down a lot of their shots,” said Lefotu, a 5-foot-9 sophomore who can play […]
