Cam Thomas, Andre Curbelo lead ‘Iolani Classic All-Tourney Team

By Paul Honda on December 22, 2019

There is a black mamba in the world of Cam Thomas. He likes it that way. The 6-foot-4 senior was a workhorse in the ‘Iolani Prep Classic, relentlessly slashing to the bucket for layups, runners and free throws. Thomas’ 30 points, plus seven rebounds, led No. 14 Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) to the school’s eighth tourney title with a 76-65 win over No. 15 Wasatch Academy (Mount Pleasant, Utah) on Saturday night. “His favorite player is Kobe […]

Defending Florida 7A state champion St. Thomas Aquinas ended Saint Louis’ 38-game winning streak with a 35-19 victory in the GEICO State Champions Bowl Series on Saturday at Fertitta Field in Las Vegas. Three Raiders rushed for touchdowns as St. Thomas Aquinas (15-0), which won its state title eight days earlier, shut out the Crusaders (12-1) in the second half. Saint Louis hadn’t played since beating Kahuku 45-6 to win its fourth consecutive Open Division state championship in Hawaii on […]

‘IOLANI CLASSIC DAY 5: Finals, Consolation updates

By Paul Honda on December 21, 2019

No. 14 Oak Hill (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) 76, No. 15 Wasatch (Mount Pleasant, Utah) 65, final Haven’t seen Coach Evans (Wasatch) nor Coach Smith (Oak Hill) this tense before a game all week. Not nervous tense, but definitely feeling the moment. This is big for both programs. Oak Hill, not their finest team ever, but very fluid, good chemistry and explosive. Wasatch, balanced, big, talented. Wasatch doing a lot of switching out of man defense, but they haven’t been […]

Crusaders in business mode as battle with St. Thomas Aquinas arrives

By Paul Honda on December 21, 2019

Hoover Dam. UNLV campus. Most of all, buffets and practice. The Saint Louis Crusaders are in business mode in Nevada this week. They just won’t have one of the nation’s top linebackers in uniform when they face St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) tonight in the GEICO State Champion Bowl Series in Las Vegas. With Jordan Botelho back home in Honolulu, Coach Cal Lee and the Crusaders are counting on the next man up, the aptly named Laakea Louis, a […]

By Jerry Campany on December 21, 2019

After taking on some of the best in the nation at the Walsh Jesuit Ironman in Ohio, Kamehameha’s Kanai Tapia is in line to face two of the best in Hawaii. Tapia is into the semifinals of the 152-pound bracket of the Hawaii Officials Tournament at Leilehua, cruising through the stacked bracket as the second seed. He beat Malu Keo of Kahuku 16-0 in his first match and Campbell’s Brock Gooman 12-1 in his quarterfinal match. But bigger monsters loom […]

Hoopbook: Lunas’ streak ends, ‘MIL is wide open’

By Paul Honda on December 20, 2019

The problem with any streak is that it comes to an end eventually. That isn’t necessarily bad, of course, even if it was a win streak that has been snapped. Lahainaluna’s 164-game win streak in Maui Interscholastic League play was and probably will be a mark that won’t be matched or surpassed. The Lady Lunas 52-44 homecourt loss to King Kekaulike — at Lahaina Civic Center — is a stunner, but isn’t shocking. Upcountry Maui has produced talented players before. […]
