Liko Soares’ 15 points spark No. 2 Maryknoll over Saint Louis

By Paul Honda on January 18, 2020

Watching the Maryknoll Spartans is a lesson in checkbox execution. Again, No. 2 Maryknoll checked enough of those prime-time, clutch-play boxes to wiggle out a 39-35 win over Saint Louis on Saturday afternoon at Clarence T.C. Ching Gymnasium. Liko Soares continued his stellar scoring with 15 points, including 5-for-6 at the free-throw line, to spark the Spartans. Maryknoll improved to 6-1 in ILH play (22-2 overall) with another methodical, walking-on-eggs battle for either team. Spartans coach Kelly Grant wasn’t impressed. […]

By Paul Honda on January 16, 2020

In a game of giants, Reggie Eiland knew his place: right in the thick of traffic. The 5-foot-10 senior came up with a key defensive play down the stretch as No. 2 Maryknoll closed the game with a 7-3 run for a 44-40 win over No. 5 Damien on Thursday night at Bishop Scanlan Gymnasium. By Paul Honda on January 16, 2020

The week is far from over, but WOW, things in prep hoops have been wild and wooly again. Namely, Kahuku and Saint Louis. There are a few teams that are playing their best basketball right now, and Kahuku — unranked for much of the season — is suddenly a state-championship contender. See and learn, fellow hoopaholics. The Red Raiders have knocked off then-No. 9 Moanalua, and on Wednesday night, they went to Pete Smith Court and stunned No. 3 Kalaheo […]

Saint Louis’ Stanley McKenzie plans to ‘bring it’ at Cal

By Nick Abramo on January 16, 2020

Saint Louis defensive tackle Stanley McKenzie usually goes big with everything he does. >> Plug up the line in the middle, deny the run and chase the quarterback? Got it. >> Bring his big bat to the plate for the Crusaders’ baseball team? Sure thing. >> Pile up 11 Division I college football offers from all across the country? You bet. >> Be a major part of Saint Louis’ resurgence as the team to beat in Hawaii, with four state […]
