By Paul Honda on February 10, 2020

This was an opportunity to thrive or dive for Moanalua. Na Menehune didn’t let it slip away, getting 11 first-quarter points from Geremy Robinson en route to a 59-51 win over No. 3 Kalaheo on Monday night in the semifinal round of the OIA playoffs at McKinley Student Council Gymnasium. Robinson was relentless, taking the ball to the rack again and again against Kalaheo’s man-to-man defense. He had 20 points by halftime, including a bucket before the buzzer. By the […]

Major underclassmen talent in girls hoops statewide makes for bright season ahead

By Paul Honda on February 10, 2020

It will be a truly rugged 2020-21 girls basketball season statewide. Just about every title contender this season, including two-time champ ‘Iolani, returns most of its starters and key reserves. >> ‘Iolani has Division I all-tournament MVP Lily Wahinekapu, Alexis Huntimer, Jovi Lefotu, Alexsandra Huntimer and Kyra Tanabe back next season for the three-peat dream. >> Between Julianna Losalio-Watson, Braelyn Kauhi and Jayla Medeiros, next year’s Konawaena Wildcats should have enough rebounding and interior defense to keep the tradition strong. […]

All four teams in tonight’s OIA semifinals ranked in Star-Advertiser Top 10

By Paul Honda on February 10, 2020

For a fourth week in a row, the Kamehameha Warriors are on the throne of the Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10. They didn’t have to lift a finger to retain the No. 1 position last week. Kamehameha (25-5) had a bye as the ILH playoffs took the stage. The Warriors will play tonight’s Damien-Maryknoll winner on Wednesday for the league title and seeded state-tournament berth. Meanwhile, Hawaii Prep (14-2) landed in the poll at No. 10. Ka Makani routed Kohala […]

Practice partners Lana Perez and Rachel Oshita cash in at OIAs

By Jerry Campany on February 10, 2020

When Lana Perez and Rachel Oshita next clash in the Moanalua wrestling room, they will do so as fellow OIA champions.  Perez pinned Leilehua’s Brooke Cabinian in 1:54 for her second OIA crown and Oshita stuck Marcella Reynolds of Radford in 5:23 for her first on Saturday in Wahiawa. Their effort led Na Menehune to their third OIA title in a row, matching a streak set by Reggie Torres and Kahuku from 2003-05. No school has won four in a […]

Kapolei’s Branden Pagurayan cements top spot of stacked 152

By Jerry Campany on February 10, 2020

Consider it the Open Division of the state wrestling tournament.  Kapolei’s Branden Pagurayan beat Moanalua’s Boltyn Taam for his third OIA championship on Saturday, cementing the two state champions in the 152-pound class at the state tournament in two weeks. Kamehameha’s Kanai Tapia, who beat Pagurayan in overtime at Officials, won the ILH with a forfeit over injured Stone Franczyk of Hanalani earlier in the day. The HHSAA seeding meeting doesn’t happen until Saturday, but Pagurayan and Tapia will be in […]

‘Iolani sweeps vote, Hanalani lands at No. 10 in final Top 10

By Paul Honda on February 10, 2020

Start to finish, the ‘Iolani Raiders left little doubt. Coming into the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships, defending champion ‘Iolani was the season-long leader atop the Star-Advertiser Top 10. But in recent weeks, the vote was not unanimous. In fact, two of the 10 voters who submitted ballots last week sided with BIIF champion Konawaena. The only teams to beat ‘Iolani were Mater Dei, back in December, and Maryknoll, in January. It stayed that way through the weekend. The Raiders […]

Moanalua’s Elijah Asuncion stays on top of OIA, eyes states

By Jerry Campany on February 10, 2020

By not looking ahead, Moanalua’s Elijah Asuncion has something new he can look fondly back on. Asuncion beat Waianae’s Branson Magsayo 3-1 in overtime on Saturday night to secure his third OIA championship, becoming just the third boy from the school to do so along with Logan Garcia (2018) and Joey Bareng (2000). The accomplishment came just under a year since he lost to Magsayo to prevent him from repeating as state champion. “I’m super happy right now, but it was […]

Kamehameha’s Paige Respicio slams her way to main event

By Jerry Campany on February 10, 2020

One of the things that makes a slam so coveted is that you have to be perfect as a freshman and stay that way for four years. Paige Respicio is an example of that excellence, starting with the Kamehameha wrestling team in the seventh grade and reaching the top of the league just two years later. Respicio finished off the career ILH slam with a win over teammate Tessia Mauia on Saturday. She is the third Kamehameha girl in a row […]
