By Nick Abramo on March 15, 2020

The selection panel for the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s All-State boys soccer team is a steady bunch. One year ago, the group of voters put just three juniors in the Stellar Eleven to go along with eight seniors. This year, they did not forget those three juniors, who all are repeat choices for 2020. The trio is led by Punahou forward Dominic Gusman, who is this year’s Player of the Year as a mighty offensive threat in the Buffanblu’s run to the […]

Less than a week into the regular season, it came to an end — possibly — on Saturday afternoon on the diamond of Patsy Mink Central Oahu Regional Park. For days, the future of the spring sports season had become unsettled as the coronavirus, COVID-19, became a pandemic. Punahou and Kamehameha played spectacular baseball at times on […]

By Nick Abramo on March 14, 2020

Saturday afternoon at the ballpark, probably for the last time this spring, fans got to see Mililani junior catcher Hunter Faildo and Campbell senior center fielder Ty Stephens provide good examples of why we play the games. After all, now that the games aren’t going to be here and the world is in crisis mode due to the COVID-19 virus pandemic, this is a great time to pause in wonder at the beauty sports can give. By Paul Honda on March 13, 2020

The senior-night portraits on the gym wall below the Punahou School seal said it all. Just two weeks into the ILH regular season, it might be over for the Buffanblu and the rest of spring sports, no thanks to the COVID-19 disease that has become a pandemic outside of the islands. Jack Deuchar made the most of it with 14 kills and two aces as defending state champion Punahou outlasted ‘Iolani 25-18, 26-24 at noisy Hemmeter Fieldhouse on Thursday night. […]

With concerns over the outbreak of the coronavirus shutting down collegiate athletics over the last 24 hours, the first prep sporting event has been canceled for the same reasons. The ILH will not hold judo tournaments scheduled for Friday and Saturday according to Hawaii Baptist athletic director Deren Oshiro. “As a precaution due to the nature of the sport,” Oshiro said. ILH boys volleyball matches scheduled for tonight are still on. An OIA softball game between Kaiser and Moanalua scheduled […]

Kamehameha standout Christmas Togiai leaning on family, friends as rehab begins

By Paul Honda on March 12, 2020

If only there was a time machine, Christmas Togiai Jr. would go back to that moment before the knee injury. It was a crucial play in a close game with Kamehameha ahead of Kahuku with less than 3 minutes left in the state-tournament semifinal round. Togiai drove the right side, as he had earlier in the game for a bucket, and collapsed. He left the game, returned with his knee wrapped up, but couldn’t finish. The Warriors won the game, […]
