ON THIS DATE: Radford track and field team is preseason favorite

By Jerry Campany on March 18, 2020

As Jim Easterwood proclaimed in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, 1969 was the year of the Ram. Easterwood’s proclamation came after talking to OIA track and field coaches, with Castle’s Don Mahi claiming that the Rams had too many horses to be challenged by anyone other than possibly Kailua. The Rams were led that year by sprinters John Brown, who ran a 9.9 in Texas, and Bernard Rembert (10.1) with Allan Overby and Jerris White providing depth. Radford had already won the […]

ON THIS DATE: Tragedy for St. Andrews girls basketball champs

By Jerry Campany on March 17, 2020

With prep sports suspended due to the coronavirus, Hawaii Prep World will look back on a random day in history. Today, we check out what the landscape looked like 100 years ago. Hawaii was battling an influenza epidemic in 1920, but the Honolulu Advertiser happily reported that although 25 new cases of the flu were reported on that day, nobody died. There had been 3,492 cases reported since the beginning of the year and 192 of them died in the […]

SPRING SPORTS Spiral Notebook: This and That

By Nick Abramo on March 17, 2020

Here we are without high school sports, so what’s a sportswriter to do? Think. Jot. Clear the desk of stuff that was on the list of things to do before the seriousness of COVID-19 put a halt to sports everywhere. So, here’s a fist bump to everybody in our sports community along with hopes and prayers that this crisis lasts a few weeks rather than a few months, or a few months rather than a year or more. And here […]

Hawaii prospects receive scholarship offers during down time

By Billy Hull on March 17, 2020

Schools are on extended spring break and all prep sports activities have been suspended indefinitely, but that hasn’t kept some of the top juniors in the state from receiving Division I scholarship offers. Campbell receiver/defensive back Titus Mokiao-Atimalala has more offers than anyone else from the Class of 2021 in Hawaii. The Sabers’ all-time leading receiver, who has a chance to shatter the state’s career receiving record if he plays a full senior season, earned his 14th offer from an […]

Hawaii’s 5 high school leagues agree to stop practices

By Nick Abramo on March 17, 2020

On Friday, the message from the Hawaii High School Athletic Association in conjunction with its five member leagues was clear: All sports activities would be suspended starting Monday until further notice due to the COVID-19 virus pandemic. But the definition of “sports activities” left a little gray area, so when Monday rolled around, at least one sports team in the state held a practice. On Monday morning, the HHSAA convened what will be a weekly meeting of the five leagues, […]

Q&A: Saint Louis pitcher/shortstop JT Navyac

By Paul Honda on March 17, 2020

He’s not just an infielder, not just a pitcher, not just a ball player. JT Navyac isn’t even just a utility guy. He is now an ace on the mound, a multiple-tool athlete, the kind that every baseball manager — he will play at Cal State Fullerton next season — needs on a successful roster. After a four-hit shutout win over Punahou last week, Navyac returned to his customary spot at shortstop as the Crusaders defeated Maryknoll on Saturday to […]

OIA West rivals Campbell and Mililani share final No. 1 ranking if season is indeed over

By Paul Honda on March 16, 2020

One of the most intriguing softball seasons in Hawaii history was cut short, perhaps just temporarily, but may have ended with two powerhouses from the OIA West sharing the throne. What’s new? Campbell and Mililani finished in a tie for first place in Monday’s Star-Advertiser Softball Top 10. Campbell (9-3, 2-1) blanked dangerous Kapolei Charter last week, 4-0, and collected three of the 10 first-place votes from the panel of coaches and media. Mililani (7-2-1, 2-0) blanked then-No. 2 Kapolei, […]
