Damien’s Jake Holtz chooses Whitworth for basketball

By Jerry Campany on March 30, 2020

Having one Hawaii player on a men’s college basketball team is rare enough — Whitworth (Wash.) might soon have two. Damien star Jake Holtz tweeted on Monday that he has accepted a scholarship offer from the Pirates, joining Leilehua product Liam Fitzgerald. Holtz is the only two-time All-State basketball player for Damien, as well as being one of the ILH’s elite quarterbacks. He explored the possibility of playing both sports at the next level, but has probably thrown his last pass […]

ON THIS DATE: Pearl City baseball team stays perfect

By Jerry Campany on March 30, 2020

The only bad thing about a long winning streak is that it is bound to end sometime. On this date in 1991, the Pearl City baseball team overcame a three-run deficit to beat Mililani 6-3 to win the OIA West with a perfect 10-0 record.  Brent Furuyama won his fourth game of the season by allowing seven hits with five walks and six strikeouts. Chad Oshiro and Chance Sing Chow paired hits and John Aiken drove in two runs, one of them […]

ON THIS DATE: Arthur Oshita helps Kaimuki to big lead in OIA East

By Jerry Campany on March 29, 2020

As a rare four-year starting pitcher, Kaimuki’s Arthur Oshita was denied his chance to win an OIA or state championship as a senior. On this day in 1975, Oshita appeared to be well on his way with a 3-2 win over Kalani. The victory moved the Bulldogs two full games ahead of the field in the OIA East with a 9-1 record.  Oshita allowed six hits in the complete game, striking out eight Falcons and only walking one. His defense committed […]

ON THIS DATE: Waianae’s James Woodard reigns at 100 meters

By Jerry Campany on March 28, 2020

For one sunny day, Waianae defensive back James Woodard reigned as the greatest sprinter in OIA varsity history. On this date in 1980, Woodard ran the 100 meters in 10.9 seconds during the OIA West championships at Moanalua. It established a record in the event, but so did the winner of every other running race. The state switched to the metric system for that season, making it the first time the race was run longer than 100 yards.  “I was used […]

CLOSING THE BOOK: Konawaena always finds a way to compete for state title

By Hawaii Prep World on March 27, 2020

Closing the Book: No. 2 Konawaena (23-4, 10-0 BIIF) The work was done well, as always, by the Konawaena Wildcats. No, it wasn’t a state-championship season. It was very close, though. In the state final, they took on No. 1 ‘Iolani, a team that routed the Wildcats in preseason. Konawaena was left in the dust early on, then roared back to take the lead. It was a battle to the end before ‘Iolani won its second state title in a […]

By Jerry Campany on March 27, 2020

On this date in 1992, Tyra Padello scored six of her 13 points in the third quarter to erase a halftime deficit and Kaimuki beat Farrington 48-40 to clinch the OIA East title with an 8-1 record. Farrington fought back to trail 42-40 with 50 seconds left on a field goal by Christina Afe but got no closer. Afe finished with 14 points and Babe Williams added 10 but repeated turnovers killed the Governors along with the 10 more personal […]

UNLV offer makes it eight total for Punahou LB Kahanu Kia

By Hawaii Prep World on March 26, 2020

Kahanu Kia feels grateful, but he won’t lie, either. UNLV’s offer on Wednesday made it a well of mixed emotions during this COVID-19 lockdown. The Punahou junior has eight FBS scholarship offers, as well as two Ivy League schools, Dartmouth and Princeton. The momentum in the recruitment of the 6-foot-2, 210-pound linebacker has picked up, but it was the cancellation of spring-break plans that were a downer. “We had a plan. This coronavirus thing has messed up a lot of […]
