By Jerry Campany on April 8, 2020

On this date in 1920, Maui had no definitive champion in girls basketball. Maui High and Alexander House of Wailuku were unable to reach terms on a championship after both schools finished the regular season at 3-1 in the three-team league. The contention was on where the championship would be played. Maui wanted it held on an outdoor court and Wailuku preferred to stay indoors to suit its faster style of play. Alexander House handed Maui its lone loss indoors […]

By Jerry Campany on April 7, 2020

People can debate great players and teams across eras all they want, but there is no debate that the older generations had the best nicknames. Hilo’s James “Useless” Puuohau was undeniably one of the greatest athletes in the entire history of the Big Island. It was his moniker, which he kept throughout his athletic career, that stood out the most. He was referred to as “useless” by newspapers as much as his first name was used. On this day in […]

By Jerry Campany on April 7, 2020

On this date in 1946, Punahou’s Verne Daily had big plans for his school’s tennis program. Daily’s dream was realized by Punahou trustee Walter Dillingham four years later when the Capt. Gaylord Dillingham courts were completed and exhibition matches involving the Australian Davis Cup team held. In 1950, the Dillingham Open was held for the first time before fizzling out in 2003, and nine years later the courts hosted an exhibition involving Wimbledon champion Maria Bueno and American star Mimi […]

By Jerry Campany on April 7, 2020

On this date in 2012, Punahou lost a rare boys volleyball match at the Clash of the Titans, but it didn’t seem to bother all-world Larry Tuileta. No. 4 Mira Costa upset the No. 2-ranked Buffanblu 25-19, 15-25, 25-14, 25-17, and Tuileta said that if he had to lose to anyone it was good that it was Mira Costa because the visitors were so good. Two years later, Tuileta was at USC with two Mira Costa stars who teammed up […]

Players and coaches on both teams had Kamehameha assistant coach Dennis Agena on their minds. Agena was in his 35th year (and still going) as a basketball coach in […]

By Jerry Campany on April 6, 2020

On this date in 2000, the ILH passed a rule limiting football teams to a roster limit of 65 without telling the coaches or athletic directors. Saint Louis boss Cal Lee vowed to fight it. A year later, Lee’s second stint as head coach was over, but the rule went away before the season started. “Isn’t participation in extracurricular activities what we want?” Lee asked. “To me it’s wrong to limit participation.” Iolani headmaster Val Iwashita headed the task force […]

APRIL 6, 1973: OIA West schools refuse to play

By Jerry Campany on April 6, 2020

On this date in 1973, the adults ruined it for some of the children. Leeward District Superintendent Domingo Los Banos announced that schools under his purview (Campbell, Pearl City, Nanakuli, Waipahu and Waianae) would not participate in any high school sports as long as the teacher’s strike lasts. OIA czar William Smithe had a simple solution, telling athletes at those schools that they would forfeit any games missed because of the district’s decision. HHSAA boss Tom Kiyosaki sided with Smithe, […]

By Jerry Campany on April 5, 2020

On this date in 1986, half of the OIA was a jumbled mess. Radford beat Leilehua 13-3 at Aloha Stadium to climb into a tie for the OIA Central crown with 11-4 records while Pearl City added to the madness by beating Waianae 5-4 to knot the Leeward race at 10-4. Gaynor Sodetani hit a grand slam to finish Radford’s victory. The Rams won the playoff with a 3-1 victory over Leilehua two days later behind Ron Hatfield‘s four-hitter and […]
