APRIL 13, 1970: Terry Onuma throws no-hitter for Aiea

On this day in 1970, Aiea’s Terry Onuma limited Castle to no hits in a 4-0 win. A few weeks later, teammate Gerry Ako did the same. Onuma, who was injured for his junior season of high school ball, struck out 12 batters and walked only two. The victory gave Leilehua sole possession of first place. On this day in 1955, the big stage didn’t faze the tiny Pahala baseball team. Pahala traveled to Honolulu Stadium over Easter break to take on three ILH teams before hitting Maui on the way back for two more games. The Trojans raised more than a few eyebrows in Honolulu, beating Saint Louis 10-1 behind Andres Deperino‘s pitching and the hitting of Felimon Sesson. APRIL 12, 2005: Iolani girls basketball team stays unbeaten

On this day in 2005, Iolani stayed unbeaten with a 43-31 win over Maryknoll after a strong start. Alana Wall led the Raiders with 10 points and three different Iolani players hit from long range. Iolani ended up making the state tournament while Maryknoll did not, finishing fifth. ILH champion Punahou won states.


APRIL 12, 1909: ILH schedules first baseball season

On this date in 1909, the ILH locked down a schedule for its first official baseball season. Punahou ended up winning the circuit, and repeated in 1910, but the thing that had fans most excited was the parity. The final contest, won by Punahou over Kamehameha in 11 innings, continued a theme of close games that was lauded by both newspapers, which pointed out that the only blowout came after the race was decided and McKinley played some younger boys. APRIL 11, 1969: Richard Vasconcellos gives public schools hope

On this day in 1969, McKinley sprinter Richard Vasconcellos made a statement for public schools when the rivalry was at its most intense. Vasconcellos won the 100- and 220-yard races at the public school meet at Cooke Field, firing a shot across the bow of the private school speedsters at Punahou. On this day in 1983, Eddie Hayashi hit a pair of home runs and Pac-Five thumped Mid-Pacific in a makeup game. For all of Hayashi’s distance, he wasn’t anywhere near the league’s leaders in batting average. That honor belonged to Kalani Perry of Kamehameha, who was hitting a robust .548 on his way to finishing at .468. On this day in 1927, the McKinley baseball team had every indication that it would have an easy time in the upcoming baseball season. Yim Lum was the star on the mound as the Tigers beat visiting Hilo 11-1 after beating the Vikings 8-3 the day before. There was plenty of room in Jerome Williams‘ shadow in 1999. On this day in 1999, Silas Ah Sui of Nanakuli and Radford’s Jacob Sur matched each other strikeout for strikeout in an OIA West clash. The Golden Hawks beat the Rams 1-0 when Maka Vickers doubled home Ah Sui in the fourth inning. Ah Sui struck out 14 Rams in seven innings and Sur punched out 12 Golden Hawks.
