You could see it coming. On this day in 1952, Frank Reveira collected three hits and drove in four runs as Saint Louis beat McKinley 19-1 in an ILH baseball game. It took more than a sister act for Aiea to win its first OIA West championship in girls basketball. On this day in 1987, Fran Villarmia and Nadine Villarmia combined to score 18 points and Jann Merseberg added 16 as Aiea beat Waipahu 48-41 to win its first division title. On this day in 2003, a pioneer of girls wrestling quit as coach to become an athletic director. Joel Kawachi, who led Moanalua to the first three state wrestling titles, is still the AD at the school. As he pointed out in the below article, Kawachi never won the OIA boys title as a coach. Henry Pogue was destined to be a star for Punahou. On this day in 1917, Pogue won the broad jump, shot put and high jump in a grammar school meet at Alexander Field. He also took fourth in the 50-yard dash and second in the 100 but the Buffanblu finished second to Saint Louis. On this day in 1992, Kalaheo’s Alika Smith expanded his range to 60 feet, 6 inches. Smith, who was deadly from 3-point range as a basketball player, took the mound and beat Mililani 1-0 in the OIA playoffs with five strikeouts on 81 pitches in the complete game. On this day in 2000, Eli McAngus hit an inside-the-park grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the seventh at Ala Wai Field and Kamehameha stunned Iolani 11-6. Bronson Sardinha, Alika Kuraoka and Kai Henry helped set up the heroics to turn a 6-5 deficit into an unlikely victory. The coronavirus pandemic is forcing high school athletes to get creative with their workout time. For Punahou’s Tevarua Tafiti, that means working out at home with a backpack filled with whatever he can find. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound sophomore doesn’t have any weights, so he’s improvised with workouts using a backpack that he fills with yearbooks, old textbooks, anything he can get his hands on. Wailaua grew baseball stars back in the day, and Toshio Kameda was just the latest. On this day in 1937, Kameda struck out 14 batters as Mid-Pacific beat Roosevelt 13-3. Kameda was the youngest of nine boys from the household. Hawaii legend Ted “Big Train” Kameda grew up to be the best of them, and they all played together during the war.
