Red Raiders or Raiders: A legacy worth keeping or evolving?

By Paul Honda on July 20, 2020

The debate continues for the passionate and compassionate fans of the Kahuku Red Raiders. Monday’s story in the Star-Advertiser about the ongoing petitions for and against the nickname included interviews with three prominent voices in the discussion. Generational, familial ties to the school are deeply rooted. Tanoai Reed played for Kahuku, as did his father and son. Kahuku graduate and Kamehameha high school teacher Norm “T-Man” Thompson also played for the Red Raiders, but has changed his perspective over time. […]

By Paul Honda on July 19, 2020

Somewhere tucked between the pastures and lakes of Oregon and Washington, a baseball club from the islands is going nuts. The Go Nuts squad, comprised of players from Farrington, Kamehameha and other schools, has made the best of a precarious time by traveling to the Northwest. A tournament scheduled this weekend in Portland, Ore., was cancelled, but head coach Al Carganilla made several phone calls and patched together a barnstorming tour of a lifetime. “You hear about the bad things, […]

Kahuku freshman Chansen Garcia lands offer from Navy

By Paul Honda on July 18, 2020

Chansen Garcia never thought about Annapolis before. Now, the Kahuku sophomore-to-be has a football scholarship offer from Navy. “(Navy) Coach Ken (Niumatalolo) saw my video. They called Coach Sterling (Carvalho), and he called my dad. It was shocking,” Garcia said. “My dad told my mom (Urnel). I thought they were joking with me at first. She was breaking down, so I was breaking down. It brought us to tears.” No mainland combines or camps. No varsity game video, though he […]

In his tweet, the 6-foot-2, 260-pound DL called it an honor. “It was an honor to participate in the FBU Camp in […]

Saturday morning grind: Crusaders among early birds training on sand

By Paul Honda on July 13, 2020

Two hours of non-stop running and hurdling in the sand is exactly what some of the most dedicated student-athletes in the state want on Saturday mornings. Three of them, Saint Louis football players Tasi Tadio, Iona Purcell and Prince Solomon, barely broke a sweat despite the constant footwork and 20- to 40-yard sprints at Ala Moana Beach Park at 7 a.m. The training is coordinated by Liahona Youth Empowerment. Approximately 50 athletes worked out, including a few from the Hawaii […]

Big ‘Red’ Debate from Pennsylvania to Kahuku

By Paul Honda on July 10, 2020

(Update: Bellefonte High School in Pennsylvania is still debating on a possible name change.) In Pennsylvania, a high school may cease being the Red Raiders. In Lubbock, Texas, a prominent university thrives as Red Raiders. What’s the difference? Possibly, community support. Since the beginning of American democracy, communities create the standards and often times, laws are created to reflect those values, for better or worse. At Kahuku, where “Red Raiders” as an identity has been set in stone since 1950, […]

By Paul Honda on July 9, 2020

Athletic directors in the Oahu Interscholastic Association have not received official word about a change in the fall sports start date. According to Ian Scheuring of Hawaii News Now, however, the date is Aug. 19. Scheuring’s tweet on Thursday afternoon caught administrators off guard. That could change with an official announcement on Friday. The Hawaii High School Athletic Association has a statewide start date for football practice, Aug. 17, but that is expected to change — possibly because of the […]

Petition to change Kahuku nickname draws supporters, opponents

By Paul Honda on July 8, 2020

(Note: The counter petition was started by Fatu Te‘o-Tafiti and has been updated as of July 9, 9 a.m.) A petition drive is underway to change the nickname of Kahuku High School. The school has been “Red Raiders” for decades after receiving much-needed uniforms from ‘Iolani generations ago. While ‘Iolani later dropped “Red” from its nickname two decades ago, Kahuku has thrived in athletics and has a rich tradition, particularly in football. The online petition has 478 signatures as of […]
