COVID-19 numbers rising, Hawaii’s leagues, HHSAA in wait-and-see mode

By Paul Honda on July 26, 2020

The scenario in California, even Nevada, is different than it is in Hawaii. Earlier in the week, Nevada became the fifth state to postpone the high school football season. California, New Mexico, Virginia and Washington have made similar decisions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevada took a different approach, moving fall sports to February. Fall sports will follow the winter season and be completed before the spring season. In Hawaii, three consecutive days of increasing single-day record case totals […]

Saint Louis OL Kalan Ellis commits to Syracuse

By Paul Honda on July 24, 2020

In February, Kalan Ellis experienced a first with a football scholarship offer from Hawaii. Saint Louis’ 6-foot-5, 358 -pound offensive lineman waited two months until his next offer arrived. Syracuse, with former Hawaii assistant coach Mike Cavanaugh leading the O-line, came knocking. By then, “Cav” and Ellis were texting daily. Though UCLA, Virginia and San Diego State entered the picture with offers later, Ellis never lost touch with Syracuse. He committed to the Orange on Thursday, capping a five-month odyssey […]

By Paul Honda on July 23, 2020

Virginia has been on the heels of rival Clemson, closing the gap year by year with some help from the islands. The Cavaliers have tapped into their Hawaii pipeline again, via assistant coach and former Kahuku standout Mark Atuaia, to catch the attention of elite Campbell wide receiver/defensive back Titus Mokiao-Atimalala. By Paul Honda on July 23, 2020

Sage Tolentino has myriad moves in his basketball arsenal. One of them was off the court when Tolentino traveled to Georgia, Kentucky and Ohio for workouts this summer. The exposure paid off on Thursday when national powerhouse Kansas offered Tolentino a scholarship. “I feel good, great. Yeah. Kansas has a great coaching staff. They really want me and they’re interested. I really like their facilities and their school. I saw it on a Zoom call. They also talked to me […]

Wisconsin, Utah hope to land Kahuku sophomore LB Liona Lefau

By Paul Honda on July 22, 2020

The COVID-19 lockdown didn’t stop Liona Lefau from grinding. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound sophomore-to-be kept working on and off the field, and the results are rewarding. Wisconsin offered a football scholarship to the 6-foot-2, 205-pound linebacker. This makes two offers; Utah made an offer to the sophomore-to-be last week while he and his Team Rager Wear 7v7 team travelled through Utah and Nevada. The Wisconsin offer came with plenty of solid vetting by Badgers assistant coach Inoke Breckterfield. Lefau’s father, Pesa, […]

Campbell freshman ace Taryn Irimata is back in the groove

By Paul Honda on July 21, 2020

Perhaps the youngest team in the state, Campbell was flying high through preseason with freshman ace Taryn Irimata dazzling and hypnotizing batters at the plate. Then it happened. The COVID-19 pandemic brought spring sports season to a screeching halt. The Sabers, who beat OIA West powerhouse Mililani twice during preseason and the abbreviated regular season, will never know what would have been. The good news is they will return most of the roster next season, if there is a season. […]

HHSAA: Independent, large-group workouts discouraged, not banned

By Paul Honda on July 21, 2020

The Hawaii High School Athletic Association’s update on Monday about no-contact rules extended to Aug. 18, but Executive Director Chris Chun expounded on the announcement. On Tuesday morning, Chun noted that workouts for student-athletes away from campus with independent groups are technically not banned by the HHSAA. The issue surfaces when team coaches are in contact with players from the same school. Groups of student-athletes from various sports and schools are free to work out with non-school coaches, Chun added. […]
