Blowout Friday is in the books

By Billy Hull on September 27, 2013

An 11-game slate of high school football games on Oahu delivered very little suspense on Friday night. In fact, six of the 11 games were decided by more than 30 points as we saw a wide gap between the top and bottom teams in both the OIA and ILH. Waianae’s 35-27 win over Kapolei was the only game decided by single digits. Kaiser dropped at least 70 on a team for the second time in 14 days, destroying Roosevelt 71-0 […]

No. 1 Punahou plays ‘Iolani at right time

By Billy Hull on September 27, 2013

Not that No. 1 Punahou needs help or anything, but the Buffanblu are getting to play ‘Iolani at the right time on Saturday. The unranked Raiders (4-3, 2-2 ILH) will likely be without the services of sophomore running back Jordan Ross as they try to snap a three-game losing streak to the visiting Buffanblu (5-0, 3-0). Ross, who has rushed for 658 yards and 10 touchdowns in seven games, injured his left ankle in the second quarter of a 19-3 […]

Golden Hawks still in hunt

By Brian McInnis on September 27, 2013

As of this moment, the Oahu Interscholastic Association White Division playoff picture is in pretty sharp focus. There’s still time for things to get seriously blurry, however. Kaiser (5-0), Radford (5-1), Pearl City (4-1) and Kalani (4-2) have the White’s four postseason berths if things ended today. Should Pearl City (at Nanakuli), Kaiser (vs. Roosevelt) and Kalani (vs. Anuenue) all win this weekend, that would solidify the situation further. Radford has a bye. But Nanakuli (2-3) and Kalaheo (2-3) might […]

No. 3 Kahuku dominates OIA showdown

By Billy Hull on September 27, 2013

Kahuku more than validated its No. 3 ranking in the latest Star-Advertiser girls volleyball top 10 poll on Thursday night. If anything, the Red Raiders showed they, not Punahou, are the team with the best shot at knocking off unanimous No. 1 Kamehameha come state tournament time. While the Warriors have ripped through the ILH, the Red Raiders hadn’t been tested in league play until Thursday night’s OIA Red East showdown against No. 6 Moanalua, which like Kahuku, was 9-0 […]

Punahou at No. 14 in West region

By Paul Honda on September 26, 2013

Student Sports FAB 50 region-by-region has unbeaten Punahou at No. 14 in the West Region Top 20. The Buffanblu are listed at 4-0 by the poll, but are actually 5-0 overall after a 63-8 win over St. Francis over the weekend. Among their games is a 10-6 win at Helix (Calif.). They were dropped one notch this week, trading places with Central Catholic (Ore.). Kamehameha is listed among the 11 “West Bubble” teams that are just outside the top 20. […]

Pearl City at it again

By Jerry Campany on September 26, 2013

The only thing new about the Pearl City football team seems to be its coaching staff, because the results are the same as always. Robin Kami, Pearl City’s third head coach in three years, has his Chargers on a four-game winning streak after starting the year 0-2. The new coach hasn’t just beaten opponents during the streak, he has obliterated them. Pearl City beat Waialua 38-12, Kalaheo 49-8, Anuenue 50-7 and Roosevelt 37-0. Things won’t be as easy for the […]

Kapolei, Waianae have a lot to play for

By Billy Hull on September 26, 2013

When No. 8 Kapolei meets No. 6 Waianae on Friday night at Raymond Torii Field, there won’t be any kind of special trophy on the line. That doesn’t mean the two schools haven’t developed a little bit of a rivalry. Waianae is 8-4 against Kapolei since the Hurricanes fielded their first football team in 2002. Playing in the OIA White Division its first two seasons, Kapolei took on Waianae in the preseason both years, splitting the two meetings. In fact, […]

Cupboard not bare at Pac-Five

By Jerry Campany on September 26, 2013

It would be easy to Pac-Five to hang its head and lament the talent that defected when St. Francis fielded a football team this year. No need. Pac-Five coach Kip Botelho has overcome it before. The last time a school defected from Pac-Five and went out on its own — Word of Life in 2008 — it paid off with two wins against the upstarts in both years the Firebrands were in existence and the Wolf Pack’s most successful season […]
