The first round of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships kicked off Friday night with the OIA scoring both wins in Division I. Over on Maui, Farrington scored an emotional victory over Baldwin, defeating the Bears 21-3. Sanele Lavatai rushed for 105 of Farrington’s 211 total yards on the ground and quarterback Montana Liana was 14-for-27 for 196 yards. The Ortiz ohana requested that the Farrington Governors football team come to Mokuleia one last time, so coach Randall Okimoto and his squad made the trek on Tuesday. The Govs had been to the beach where Dayne Ortiz suddenly disappeared, lost in the sea. They were there on Sunday and Monday as search crews worked valiantly. In a season that had two of the top programs — Kahuku and Punahou — break in new coaches, it took familiarity to take the title. Kamehameha’s Chris Blake won his seventh girls championship on Friday night, tying Dan Kitashima of Kamehameha. Kitashima won his first in 1994 and his last one in 1999, going an astounding 243-20 in his career. Blake helped Kitashima win five of them as an assistant. Blake is a mere 206-24. Pearl City sweeps state bowling titles

Pearl City swept the individual and team titles at the HHSAA Bowling State Championships on Friday at Hickam Bowling Center. Chargers senior Nicholas Azumi won the individual boys title, and sophomore Chelsi Morishige took the girls trophy. Azumi’s nine-game pinfall total was 1,905, leading Pearl City’s boys to a team-title-winning total of 8,748. Morishige’s 1,747 total led the Chargers to a team-best 7,790 pins.
