All-State football, 1972-present

By Jerry Campany on August 8, 2014

During the Star-Advertiser’s countdown of the top 10 teams in preseason we have been publishing each team’s first-team All-State players. Now it is time for every school’s greatest heroes. The first All-State team was published by the Honolulu Advertiser in 1972 and the Star-Bulletin followed with its first team in 1977, satisfied with publishing only all-league teams during that span using the rational that they hadn’t seen enough neighbor-island teams to accurately choose the best. The Star-Bulletin did give out […]

Moanalua’s Cauley just couldn’t stay away

By Nick Abramo on August 8, 2014

Sometimes, a man’s hankering for football needs to be quenched. And so it was for Jason Cauley, who had just moved to Hawaii four years ago and felt the need to get back into doing what he loves — coaching football. The urge hit him almost immediately after arriving from Mobile, Ala., where he had been an assistant along with his brother, Rick Cauley, at Murphy High School. And then, bam, things happened fast, really fast, for the man who […]

Kaiser, ‘Iolani among those left out of top 10

By Paul Honda on August 7, 2014

It’s through no fault of their own, really. Every year, the Star-Advertiser Football Preseason Top 10 is released in countdown fashion. By midseason, few fans remember who was ranked where. But it’s safe to say, those teams that were neglected by voters — coaches and media — can use the snub as fuel. That might be the case for Kaiser, which dominated the OIA White last year and went on to capture the Division II state title. First-year head coach […]

No. 1 Punahou All-State football

By Jerry Campany on August 7, 2014

Pupule Paul Honda is crazier than you think. The Prince of Preps actually rates as many high school players as he can and plugs them into his NCAA football game, replaying games that he has already seen. He already has Vavae Malepaei at 99 and Wayne Taulapapa at 98, feel free to add you rankings in the comments to this post. He can’t wait to play the games that were canceled this weekend. He only does teams year-by-year, but if […]

No. 2 Mililani All-State football

By Jerry Campany on August 6, 2014

Every year is the year of the Trojan. Mililani, for long an also-ran in state football, has had a player selected first team All-State every year since 2002. That is the longest active streak. Kahuku’s string stretched to 1997 before being shut out last year. The Trojans started their run in 2003 when Mikhail Mabry and Sene Ma’afala were selected and might have reached its peak last year with six selections. KK Padello led the way for the Trojans with […]

Introducing our prep football record book

By Billy Hull on August 5, 2014

In our effort to create the best possible statistical database for high school football in Hawaii, we are finally able to present our statistical leaders among Oahu high schools in rushing, passing and receiving since 1973. The complete record book can be found here: http://www.hawaiiprepworld.com/football/record-book/ and will be displayed on the main page as well as under the football tab. These marks include every game played, whether it’s preseason, interleague, regular season or postseason. The statistics come from our lengthy […]

No. 3 Saint Louis All-State football

By Jerry Campany on August 5, 2014

Gerald Welch brings people together like no prep football player ever has. Welch is the only player in Hawaii’s long history of prep football to be named first-team All-State by two newspapers three times. Welch, a receiver for Saint Louis, was named first team by both the Honolulu Advertiser and Honolulu Star-Bulletin in 1997, 1998 and 1999. Those two newspapers rarely agreed on anything, especially when it came to All-State football teams. Since Honolulu is a one-newspaper town now, it […]

No. 4 Kamehameha All-State football

By Jerry Campany on August 4, 2014

The power running game is back at Kamehameha. Coach Doug Cosbie‘s smashmouth system was successful last year, but injuries forced him to split carries between Brandon Kahookele and Kainoa Simao, leaving them shut out of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s first team when All-State selections were announced. Looking back on selections of the past, having a 9-2 Kamehameha team virtually assures a spot among the elite. The Warriors have not had a running back on the first team since Ryan Ho in […]
