Klaneski keen on ‘high energy’ Monarchs

By Nick Abramo on November 5, 2015

It’s Novemeber and the Damien football team is practicing on campus. Yes sir, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II champion Monarchs (6-1) — who are usually done their season in October — are in the postseason for the first time in what seems like a lifetime to the players. They were preschoolers and toddlers in 2003, the last time Damien tasted a state-tournament appearance. The players are reveling in the experience. “Everyone is super excited,” junior linebacker Shawn Borges said […]

Sports to Ponder: Big W’s for ILH teams

By Nick Abramo on October 18, 2015

Head coach Eddie Klaneski‘s hair was wet after Damien wrapped up the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II championship with a 28-16 win over Pac-Five on Saturday at Aloha Stadium. It wasn’t raining, so it was most likely a Gatorade bath or some other such celebratory device that comes with winning the school’s first football title in 12 years. Cal Lee‘s hair was wet after No. 2 Saint Louis got past No. 1 Punahou 30-14 in the nightcap at the […]

Saints make their case in hot ILH Division II race

By Nick Abramo on October 11, 2015

If you were looking for a nice, clean separation of teams in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II football standings, you have been recently disappointed. St. Francis threw a wrench into things and did not finish its regular season like it started. After losing their first two league games, the Saints stopped playing like a newbie (they’re in their third season of varsity football) and developed into a solid contender. Contender? Yes, with two straight wins, St. Francis (4-4, […]

By Billy Hull on October 9, 2015

We knew when ‘Iolani jumped to Division I that there would be a new ILH Division II champion crowned for the first time since 2003. We didn’t know it might happen this quick. Damien, which is off to its first 5-0 start in school history, needs a win in either of its next two games to clinch the league title and automatic berth to the state tournament. The Monarchs won the first meeting against the Saints, 21-6, but St. Francis […]

LIVE BLOG: Damien 6, Pac-Five 3

By Billy Hull on September 25, 2015

Damien and Pac-Five have been rivals for a long time but tended to play second-fiddle to ‘Iolani in the ILH Division II race. That has changed this season with the Raiders moving up to Division I as both the Wolfpack (4-0) and Monarchs (3-0) enter Friday night’s game undefeated and looking to take a big step toward claiming an ILH championship. Damien is 4-0 for the first time in school history and has won the last four against Pac-Five. The […]

By Nick Abramo on September 22, 2015

Damien is itching to get back to the Division II state tournament for the first time since 2003. And for those who are counting, that was 12 years ago, the year of the inaugural D-II states. This season, the Monarchs are in a position to control their own destiny after dispatching St. Francis 21-6 on Saturday. Aside from some uneven moments in the second half, Damien (4-0, 1-0) controlled the tempo and owned the momentum. The first crucial test comes […]

VIDEO: Raiders of the Lost Art: Tweaking out

By Paul Honda on October 27, 2014

Back in the day, ‘Iolani’s football field was not so different. The same scorching South Shore sun. The same occasional breeze drifting down from Palolo and Manoa Valleys. But the bleachers were metal. An afternoon game plus those bleachers could fry an okole or two. Down below, between the old tennis courts was the entrance to that field. The famous ice cream vending machine with three doors and choices. (I miss that thing even if I rarely had the money […]
