SHA’s galaxy of All-Americans includes sophomore Andromeda Tong

By Paul Honda on September 27, 2020

Sophomore All-American has quite the ring to it. Andromeda Tong wasn’t expecting to hear that truth, but the UCA named her one of four selections to its All-America team last week. “I feel very lucky and blessed to be given the opportunity. I was honestly surprised when I saw the email that I made All-American. I didn’t expect to make it,” Tong said. Her three varsity teammates also on the All-American team: Cayla Cabanban, Alissa De Smet and Jacelyn Tanvasa. […]

Ace of base: Jacelyn Tanuvasa powers to All-American honor

By Paul Honda on September 25, 2020

Four-time state champions are rare enough. Jacelyn Tanuvasa is halfway there. The Sacred Hearts junior was on board and full throttle for the last two Medium Division competitive cheer state titles, and after earning her first UCA All-American selection last week, the junior is ready for the next hurdle. “It made me happy. Even though we haven’t been able to practice as a team or attend any camps, it’s great to know that my hard work paid off,” Tanuvasa said. […]

By Paul Honda on September 24, 2020

Alissa De Smet is part of the state championship dynasty at Sacred Hearts Academy, but until last week, she didn’t quite know the extent of her talent. The senior was selected to the UCA All-American team, one of four Lancers on the varsity competitive cheer squad honored. Cayla Cabanban, Jacelyn Tanuvasa and Andromeda Tong were also chosen to the national honors. “It’s very different to be doing it. This is my first year trying out for All-American,” De Smet said. SHA’s 4-time All-American Cayla Cabanban a stickler for hard work

By Paul Honda on September 23, 2020

When it comes to motivation, the Sacred Hearts Lancers don’t have to look far. Cayla Cabanban brings an alpha mentality to the floor and it doesn’t matter that the three-time state champion and four-time All-American is due for a rest break. The senior earned UCA All-American honors last week, joined by three varsity teammates from Sacred Hearts. “I tried every year since freshman year and made it every year, but I never went to the camp on the mainland,” Cabanban […]

Four of the Lancers earned All-American honors over the weekend from the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA). Cayla Cabanban, Alissa De Smet, Jacelyn Tanuvasa and Andromeda Tong were named among the best in the country. Gaining individual accolades on top of team […]

HHSAA: Fall sports likely to be pushed back 2 weeks

By Paul Honda on July 9, 2020

Athletic directors in the Oahu Interscholastic Association have not received official word about a change in the fall sports start date. According to Ian Scheuring of Hawaii News Now, however, the date is Aug. 19. Scheuring’s tweet on Thursday afternoon caught administrators off guard. That could change with an official announcement on Friday. The Hawaii High School Athletic Association has a statewide start date for football practice, Aug. 17, but that is expected to change — possibly because of the […]

No Emmitt, no Crocker, but Sacred Hearts and Baldwin dazzle

By Nick Abramo on November 9, 2019

Some people in the crowd Saturday had that look of hope when the emcee called out the presence of Emmitt Smith, Gov. David Ige, Betty Crocker and former Gov. Ben Cayetano. It was a joke to break that dull period between the end of bold athletic performances and the announcement of the final scores at the Blaisdell Arena. And when the scores trickled in, two teams with high hopes to win the competition got what they were looking for. Sacred […]

6 former Moanalua cheerleaders now on the college scene

By Nick Abramo on September 10, 2019

Blossom Caballero‘s cheerleading squad had a busy time last week, cheering for three of the Moanalua volleyball team’s matches and one of the football team’s games in Las Vegas. Na Menehune cheerleaders are among the state’s best when it comes to the state tournament. They’ll be going for the medium division state title later this year. They also have three state crowns in the last four years (2015 large, 2016 medium, 2018 large), and the year they didn’t take states […]
