Campbell’s near miss has the fifth-ranked Sabers’ believing

By Nick Abramo on September 29, 2019

One of the more memorable plays for No. 5 Campbell on Saturday night in Ewa Beach was the second-to-last snap for the Sabers in a 31-21 loss to No. 3 Punahou. Let’s set the stage. A mighty comeback and upset bid was all but over, but still Campbell persisted and did not throw in the towel. The Sabers had cut it to 24-21 with 4:09 left. Had they then gotten a stop on the Buffanblu’s next possession, a comeback was […]

Campbell’s Jonan Aina-Chaves hits career rushing milestone

By Billy Hull on September 23, 2019

After playing for two years at St. Francis, running back Jonan Aina-Chaves was forced to transfer schools for his senior season. The only returning Star-Advertiser All-State first-team selection to find a new home in the offseason, Aina-Chaves got off to a slow start for Campbell but has picked it up over the last three weeks. The 5-foot-8, 180-pound workhorse averaged less than 50 yards rushing a game before a recent three-game winning streak by the Sabers in which he has […]

By Nick Abramo on September 21, 2019

Scuffling along through a difficult season, a proud Waianae football team rose up and took aim at knocking off No. 5 Campbell on Saturday night. Staggered early in the contest in Ewa Beach, the Seariders responded resoundingly and landed some big blows before bowing out 41-31. Had it not been for Campbell’s finely-tuned offense, an upset could have been there for the taking. Titus Mokiao-Atimalala, the Sabers’ whiz-kid receiver, did some serious damage to Waianae’s chances. It was the Campbell […]

Campbell’s Jonan Aina-Chaves and Blaine Hipa provide much-needed balance on offense

By Nick Abramo on September 14, 2019

Coaches talk about being balanced on offense all the time. It doesn’t happen as much as they want it to, but there was some fantastic symmetry for the fifth-ranked Campbell Sabers on Friday night in a 45-13 sledgehammering of westside rival Kapolei. Led by Jonan Aina-Chaves and the offensive line, Campbell chewed up 225 rushing yards. At the quarterback spot, Blaine Hipa sprayed the ball liberally to five receivers for 206 yards and five touchdown passes. That’s the balance coaches […]
