UPDATE: Master’s 71, Kaiser 51, F

By Paul Honda on December 18, 2015

Opening-round matchup, ‘Iolani Classic. FIRST QUARTER The Master’s Academy hails from Oviedo, Fla. They’ve got nice size but nothing like the other mainland teams here. They’re using a 1-3-1 halfcourt zone that isn’t creating turnovers by Kaiser, but it’s disrupting their usual flow. Keoua Mahiko has scored seven points already, including a pair of left wing 3s. Chance Kalaugher committed a silly foul after a Kaiser miss and was pulled out of the game. Good move; they can’t afford to […]

By Paul Honda on December 18, 2015

One of the traditions within the legacy that ‘Iolani Classic founder established was this: a Chinese high school team has played in this tourney every season for years now. This year’s invitee, Guangming, is up against a tall order in La Lumiere, which is ranked No. 6 in the nation by USA Today. This is one of four games scheduled today to complete the opening round. Wednesday/Day 1 scores Lone Peak (Utah) 89, Farrington 24 Mount St. Joseph (Md.) 72, […]

UPDATE: #7 Kalaheo 69, Radford 47, F

By Paul Honda on December 17, 2015

It’s 29-21 at the half with the home team, Kalaheo ahead. I caught what I coukd while I wrote a story for print on the previous game between Saint Louis and Campbell. I’ve been looking forward to seeing Kalaheo. Are they anywhere near what they were last year when Alika Smith led them to the state title? The answer is sorta. They are young. They’ve got veteran leadership from Kekai Smith. But they will need time to really develop into […]

UPDATE: #8 Saint Louis 77, Campbell 47, F

By Paul Honda on December 17, 2015

Saint Louis broke an 8-all tie with a 14-0 run, triggered mainly by a 1-2-2 halfcourt trap with super-quick Isaac Slade-Matautia on top. 22-8 after one quarter. SECOND QUARTER Domination by the Crusaders. Chris Sykes and Tristan Nichols complementing each other nicely. Nichols sat most of the quarter and other players like Lance Satakaka picked up the slack. HALFTIME Nichols has 19 points and seven points. Slade-Matautia was the spark with those midcourt steals, a one-man press. Campbell has committed […]

UPDATE: University 51, Waianae 34, 3:56

By Paul Honda on December 17, 2015

Pete Smith Classic Opening round One quarter is in the books and University High leads Waianae 17-8. The Junior Rainbows look solid and smart. Sure, there are just nine players on the roster, but that’s all they need. Ryan Hobus, their agile big man, isn’t doing all the work inside by himself. The Jr. ‘Bows are using a 2-2-1 press to get steals. Five turnovers by the Seariders led to a 13-1 UHS lead midway through the first quarter. SECOND […]

Rise of the Owls, chapter 1

By Paul Honda on December 16, 2015

In this series of What Have We Learned — several bits of posts are coming this afternoon — we take a an early glance at the rise of success building in Mills Gym on the campus of Mid-Pacific Institute. Yes, we have observed the amazingness and spectaculourosity (two words that do not exist, but should) of Chanelle Molina, who helped the Konawaena Wildcats win the ‘Iolani Classic, and Chance Kalaugher, who contributed to Kaiser’s 4-0 record last week, including three […]
