LIVE BLOG: #8 Leilehua 47, Guangming 28, F

By Paul Honda on December 22, 2015

The Guangming Dragons have come bearing gifts for the Leilehua Mules, and vice-versa. The Dragons brought coach Russ Fitzgerald a red box and the Mules have gift-wrapped goodies. Looks like Hawaiian Host chocolate candies. Just a guess. This is the last game of the ‘Iolani Classic for both teams. Leilehua lost to Mount St. Joseph (Md.) 72-42, lost to Farrington 46-43, beat No. 10 Kahuku 45-42 and now meet the Dragons in this 10:30 a.m. game. They are playing with […]

UPDATE: #10 Kahuku 60, Kaimuki 48, F

By Paul Honda on December 22, 2015

The first game of the day, the final day of the ‘Iolani Classic, matches up No. 10 Kahuku and Kaimuki. The Bulldogs have been up in the past week — an upset win over then-No. 5 Leilehua — and down. But it’s not the same down I’ve seen with a few other teams. Kaimuki’s not tall, not extremely skilled, but they play hard from start to finish. There have been lesser efforts in the dog days of preseason. Kahuku? Blessed […]

Sierra Canyon reaches Classic final

By Paul Honda on December 21, 2015

A nationally-ranked squad from Utah got the team from SoCal revved up. Sierra Canyon, a tiny school (enrollment 450) from the outskirts of Los Angeles, used a 22-0 run in the second half to pull away from Lone Peak in a 73-45 semifinal win on Monday night at the ‘Iolani Classic. The Trailblazers will play the La Lumiere (Ind.)-Fairfax (Calif.) winner in tonight’s final. The team from Chatsworth, Calif. looked every bit the part of a potential Classic champion. Point […]

UPDATE: La Lumiere 29, Fairfax 20, F

By Paul Honda on December 21, 2015

The second semifinal of the ‘Iolani Classic pits Indiana and another SoCal team, Fairfax. Potent teams like this are a big reason why the Classic is one of the premiere tournaments in the nation. FIRST HALF Fairfax is doing all it can to slow the pace and La Lumiere is content to offer some pressure with a 1-3-1 halfocurt zone, but they haven’t gone all out trapping. Still, Isaiah Coleman’s halfcourt bank shot sparked the Lakers and gave them a […]

LIVE BLOG: Master’s 65, ‘Iolani 50, F

By Paul Honda on December 21, 2015

Nice matchup at the ‘Iolani Classic between the tough Eagles of The Master’s Academy (Fla.) and host ‘Iolani, the top-ranked team in Hawaii. FIRST QUARTER Hugh Hogland scores on a low-post drop step move. Nice. But the Eagles as always are racing upcourt and moving the ball with long passes. Jakobi Bonner scores on another one of his lefty layups. Nick Kennedy hits an elbow J for a 4-2 lead and the Raiders race back on defense before they get […]

UPDATE: Mt. St. Joseph 79, Martinsburg 38, F

By Paul Honda on December 21, 2015

This consolation game between Mount St. Joseph (Baltimore, Md.) and Martinsburg (W.V.) has been one-sided. The Gaels have been too physical and tall on the offensive boards. Martinsburg beat Kahuku 73-48 in the opening round on Thursday, but just can’t match up against the senior-heavy Gaels. Third quarter ends with Mount Saint Joseph ahead 58-26.

Another consolation matchup at the ‘Iolani Classic. Consolation isn’t quite the word for hoop fans. There are so many good local teams in this tourney, this is more like a preview of the state tourney. FIRST QUARTER Chance Kalaugher opens with a bank-shot 3 from the left wing. After he’s called for an offensive foul — tight on-ball position by MPI’s Major Davis — the Cougars get a 3 from Keoua Mahiko. MPI staying close. It’s 8-4 after Nic Tom […]
