UPDATE: #3 Kaiser 53, #1 ‘Iolani 46, F

By Paul Honda on December 29, 2015

We’re at the half and I’m writing for print tomorrow, so this is an abbreviated update post. IOL is using big scoring center Hugh Hogland on a very limited basis due to his ankle issue. He’s tweaked it twice in preseason already. It’s been a great game so far with a lot of momentum switches and great shooting by both sides. IOL led 18-13 after one quarter. KAIS led 34-33 at the half. Great back-and-forth in the last 3 minutes […]

Akina prepared to file suit against Kahuku

By Paul Honda on December 29, 2015

Silence is not golden, according to Alan Akina. The Kahuku boys basketball coach was forced to step down over the weekend, and he does not plan on going away quietly. “We’ve been trying to reach them, the school administration, but they won’t return my calls,” said Akina’s attorney, Eric Seitz. “I’m in a position to help them resolve this. Without any contact, we’re going to end up suing them.” Akina declined to comment, but sources indicate that a parents meeting […]

UPDATE: McKinley 45, Kailua 40, F

By Paul Honda on December 29, 2015

The McKinley Tigers are playing well so far in their matchup with Kailua at the Punahou Invitational. The Tigers started strong and led 14-6. The lead was down to 24-21 by halftime, and then the Tigers opened the second half with a 9-0 run. Kailua has stuck with man defense, and the trio of Huthifa Abel-Jawad, Kyle Moraga and burly 6-foot-5 center Mark Burke has been efficient. Burke scored twice in the paint during the run, and Jeremy Coloyan soared […]

UPDATE: Kahuku 53, #7 Kalaheo 49, 2 OT, F

By Paul Honda on December 29, 2015

It’s been a crazy few minutes here at the Punahou Invitational, where Kalaheo and Kahuku are knotted going into a second overtime period. Kalaheo had the lead thanks to some clutch free throws by seldom-used sophomore Harry Wallace. He’s stepped up big with senior leader Kekai Smith sidelined (meniscus surgery). Kieran Spencer swished a 23-footer pull-up 3-pointer at the buzzer to bring the Red Raiders a minor miracle. That tied the game at 42-all. The Mustangs went ahead on two […]

Big Red Silencio

By Paul Honda on December 29, 2015

As of Monday, Kahuku returned to the Punahou Invitational with a full roster. The Red Raiders struggled past Punahou II, 42-41. This was a flip-flop from Saturday’s circumstances, when just five players were in uniform and another 10 were in street clothes watching the game from the bleachers in an act of protest. Take a look below at the official lineups provided by the Punahou Invitational tournament. The first is from Day 1, when the protest occurred. The second is […]

LIVE BLOG: #3 Punahou 57, El Segundo 40, F

By Paul Honda on December 28, 2015

It’s a lot to expect a team to fly nearly 3,000 miles to any destination, then take on the home team in a feature game when the entire gym (almost) is cheering against you. That’s what the El Segundo boys basketball team is up against with Punahou, the No. 3-ranked team in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10. It’s been a heck of a ride so far for the Buffanblu, rolling against teams near and far and losing just twice, both […]

UPDATE: #6 Kamehameha 66, Moanalua 38, F

By Paul Honda on December 28, 2015

This was a two-point game in the first half, but the Kamehameha Warriors have been on a shooting tear since against the Moanalua Na Menehune. It’s always a bit more interesting when friends, especially a former assistant coach (Byron Mello of Moanalua) faces his former head coach (Greg Tacon). In many aspects, these are mirror images in their sets, defensive (man to man) philosophy and maybe even terminology. While Moanalua has stuck with basic man defense, Kamehameha has mixed in […]
