Mitchell’s 47-point night, part 1

By Paul Honda on January 13, 2016

Once in a great while, as in every few decades (or days), someone does something that makes you go, “WOHHHH!” Micah Mitchell did that something on Tuesday night. The Hawaii Baptist guard made 13 3-pointers — THIRTEEN! — and finished with 47 points in an 87-80 home loss to Le Jardin. All kinds of thoughts ran through my mind when the Mad Librarian, Jerry Campany, shared the news with me over the phone while I sat there in ‘Iolani Gymnasium. […]

Kahuku boys basketball coach Alan Akina filed a lawsuit in the First Circuit Court on Monday against the Department of Education, the Kahuku administration and some parents of players on the team. Akina contends he was wrongly suspended due to placing his freshman son, Kawika Akina, on the varsity team. Kahuku principal Pauline Masaniai and athletic director Gillian Yamagata were named as defendants along with parents Deloma Sauvao and Pua Spencer, and the Department of Education. There are other unnamed […]

Rising Owls, chapter 3

By Paul Honda on January 11, 2016

It was a chance encounter, running into Mid-Pacific boys basketball coach Ryan Hirata at the Kaiser-Kailua showdown last Thursday. He was merely a spectator, taking in the game for multiple reasons, I’m guessing. Hirata, a former state champion player at ‘Iolani, may have been there in support of another Raider state champion, Kaiser assistant coach Kainoa Scheer. Or he may have been gathering notes on a potential postseason foe. Let that sink in. Mid-Pacific in the state basketball tournament against, […]

In the girls Top 10, the biggest move was by Roosevelt (6-0 OIA East), […]

Punahou future looking good despite loss

By Curtis Murayama on January 7, 2016

When is a loss a good loss? Possible when it happens in the league opener, with a young team that will only learn from the experience, improve and get better. That was the assessment of Punahou boys coach Darren Matsuda, after his No. 1-ranked Buffanblu rallied but fell to No. 9 Mid-Pacific 56-54 Wednesday night at Mills Gym on the Mid-Pacific campus. “Losing right now is not necessarily a bad thing,” Matsuda said. “I think it’s a good thing actually. […]

By Jerry Campany on January 6, 2016

TThe crazy ILH boys basketball season is upon us, and No. 9 Mid-Pacific started the party with a 56-54 upset of No. 1 Punahou at Mills Gymnasium on Wednesday night. Justin Daise led the Owls with 26 points and the Buffanblu didn’t put anyone in double figures. Mid-Pacific parent Lance Kimura was there with his camera, here is a little bit of what he saw.

Kahuku’s Akina addresses suspension

By Nick Abramo on January 6, 2016

Alan Akina tells his side of the story concerning his suspension as coach of the Kahuku basketball team on a Facebook post from Jan. 1. On Dec. 29, Hawaii Prep World learned of Akina’s suspension, which occurred apparently for alleged favoritism toward his two sons, Keanu Akina and Kawika Akina. Hawaii Prep World realizes the Department of Education and the Kahuku administration may have had valid reasons for the suspension, so we would welcome and publish any statement from either […]
