By Paul Honda on January 18, 2016

The latest Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10 poll is out, and though nothing has changed immensely, there’s enough about this season’s composition to make most fans go, “Hmm.” Kaiser collected all 19 votes to remain perched atop the rankings. ‘Iolani, which was ranked No. 1 earlier in the season, moved up two spots to No. 2, while Saint Louis dropped a notch to No. 3 after a home loss to Kamehameha. Some pupule thoughts: >> ILH house of war As […]

ILH chasing, Kaiser still No. 1, part 2

By Paul Honda on January 18, 2016

See Part 1 here >> Plateau moment for Owls The Mid-Pacific Owls’ 2-0 start in ILH action has been neutralized by 3-point losses at Saint Louis and at ‘Iolani. In the mad scramble of ILH hoops, 2-2 is not a bad place to be. The regular-season champion will earn an automatic state berth, and that opportunity will reduce some teams to a crawl pace. Efficiency reigns over run-and-gun fun every year in the ILH. >> Warrior uprising For all the […]

UPDATE: #6 Maryknoll 58, #3 Punahou 50, F

By Paul Honda on January 16, 2016

This was a 13-all game after one quarter before the host Maryknoll Spartans went on a remarkable run. Michael Mercado-Smith, a senior guard, was the sparkplug with eight points in a row to begin the second quarter, and he also hustled for three of his four offensive rebounds. Isiah Gelacio (five points) and Jordyn Perez (three points) have been nearly flawless at the point for Maryknoll. The Spartans have handled Punahou’s fullcourt pressure well, committing just one turnover in the […]

By Paul Honda on January 15, 2016

The Bulldogs of Le Jardin Academy are making the big leap on the basketball court. This year, the boys team is more than staying close. They are 4-0 in ILH Division II. Coach Kenneth Powell, a former Saint Louis JV coach, made his offseason plans known to the ‘Dogs and they came through. Le Jardin posted preseason wins over Honokaa, Pearl City, Maryknoll I-AA, Castle (twice) and Waianae. Throw in a six-point loss to Kaiser and a respectable 11-point loss […]

Warning: Watch out for Kahuku basketball team

By Nick Abramo on January 14, 2016

Bet ya’ didn’t expect a positive spin. The two football boys were not there. The two Akina boys were. The Akina coach was not behind the bench. The Akana coach was. There is some in-house fighting up there on the North Shore. Alan Akina was deposed as coach (at least temporarily). The word is that he was told not to bring up his youngest son, Kawika Akina, from the junior varsity team, but that he did just that based on, […]

Mitchell’s 47-point night, part 2

By Paul Honda on January 14, 2016

George Weeks had no idea. When sophomore Micah Mitchell poured in 47 points, including 13 treys, during a 87-80 loss to Le Jardin, he was simply keeping his team in the game. “I didn’t even realize he made 13 threes. I was more concerned with our team making free throws and rebounding,” said Weeks, HBA’s boys basketball coach. The win was crucial for the Bulldogs of Le Jardin, who are now 3-0 in ILH D-II. “We came in knowing the […]
