Final 4: Punahou 52, Kahuku 50, OT

By Paul Honda on February 19, 2016

We’re 5 minutes away from tip-off for ILH runner-up Punahou and the OIA’s fifth-place team, Kahuku. The Red Raiders have been large and in charge lately now that everybody’s back from football visits, now that there’s no drama off the court regarding coaching and who gets to shoot and all that mess. Nope. It’s just basketball now and that’s a beautiful thing. Kahuku may be feeling great about this late-season run. So is Punahou. After being No. 1 in preseason […]

What Have We Learned: 48 Hours

By Paul Honda on February 19, 2016

In this edition of What Have We Learned, it’s a boys basketball chapter, the big dance episode flavored with a pinch of stunning reality. After two days, this is what we know. >> The most valuable block party Hugh Hogland had some struggles offensively, watching shots rattle in and out all night against Baldwin. But defensively, he threw a gem with five blocks to go with his four points. It’s not often that any player has more blocks than points, […]

UPDATE: ‘Iolani 43, Baldwin 27, F

By Paul Honda on February 18, 2016

It’s a defensive struggle through two quarters between top-seeded ‘Iolani and MIL runner-up Baldwin. The Raiders jumped to an 8-0 start but haven’t been able to put away the short-range shots in the paint against a resilient Bears defense. THIRD QUARTER ‘Iolani guard Helam Baldomero opens the second half with a corner 3, his second of the game. Zach Gelacio hits a 10-footer in the paint and now it’s 19-8. Baldomero draws contact, hits two FTs and now has 10 […]

UPDATE: Kaiser 77, Waiakea 61, F

By Paul Honda on February 18, 2016

We are 5 minutes from tip-off between BIIF champion Waiakea and OIA runner-up Kaiser here at McKinley Student Council Gymnasium. It’s the quarterfinal round of the OC-16/HHSAA Boys Basketball Division I State Championships. Kaiser rallied past Kailua on Wednesday night to advance. It was one of the headiest, most disciplined games I’ve seen the Cougars play. Chance Kalaugher stayed out of foul trouble, just using his length to affect Kailua’s post players. It was a smart, defensive-minded win with a […]

Kahuku’s Souza has a night to remember

By Nick Abramo on February 17, 2016

This is one of those feel-good stories. Aaron Souza, a 6-foot-2 senior guard for the Kahuku Red Raiders, has played sparingly this year. But he got into the team’s state-tournament first-round 72-40 victory over Konawaena on Wednesday night and played a memorable few minutes in mop-up time. Souza went 1-for-3 from the field for two points and grabbed a defensive rebound in three minutes on the floor. His teammates and coaches and Red Raiders fans cheered loudly when he scored […]

UPDATE: Kaiser 41, Kailua 35, F

By Paul Honda on February 17, 2016

Kailua’s upset bid against Kaiser is hanging by a thread. The Surfriders led 14-10 at the half, but Kaiser went on a 16-6 run to take a 26-20 lead entering the fourth quarter. The Cougars have been patient and willing to battle Kailua at its slower tempo. Perimeter man-to-man press by Michael Miske and Keoua Mahiko has become a big factor. Nic Tom, at 5-foot-10, is matching up effectively against Kailua’s 6-3 and 6-4 posts. The biggest factor, though, is […]

UDPATE: Baldwin 43, McKinley 40, F

By Paul Honda on February 17, 2016

We are 10 minutes away from opening tip of the OC-16/HHSAA Boys Basketball Division I State Championships. I’m at McKinley Student Council Gymnasium, where Baldwin is the home team against McKinley. Baldwin is the MIL runner-up, guided by longtime guru Wayne Gushiken. McKinley is the OIA third-place team, led by one of the mellowest coaches ever, Duane Omori. Baldwin hasn’t been king of the MIL for some time, but is still formidable and dangerous. McKinley is at home and that […]
