‘Tis the season for hoops hysteria

By Paul Honda on November 24, 2016

I‘m grateful for many things. One is covering sports for eight years in a place that has, as my old editor Bobby Command (at West Hawaii Today) would say, “provincial” qualities. Honokaa vs. Kohala basketball in the 1990s drew packed gyms for boys and girls games. Cousins versus cousins, going back generations. Keone Emeliano, Kalei Emeliano, Travis Van Zandt, Kihei Kapeliela, Benny Alcoran launching 3-point bombs all night for Kohala. Jayme Carvalho, Taich Alip, Kaulana Noa holding down the fort […]

Ex-Moanalua G Keene leads NCAA in scoring

By Paul Honda on November 23, 2016

Point guard Marcus Keene made quite a splash during his one season at Moanalua. Playing under then-Na Menehune boys basketball coach Greg Tacon, Keene was a 5-foot-8 starting point guard as a freshman on a team that featured 6-4 high flyer Marcus Monroe. Behind Keene’s team-high 14 points, Na Menehune defeated Kahuku 64-58 in the OIA Red championship game and reached the state-tourney quarterfinal round. A year later, Keene’s military family moved to San Antonio. In 2012, the San Antonio […]

Moanalua rocks a colorful new scoreboard

By Nick Abramo on May 5, 2016

For anyone who has been to the Moanalua gym recently, you’ve seen this big, colorful, beautiful new scoreboard. It’s way more than a scoreboard actually. It’s made up of multiple TV screens and can be used for presentations at school assemblies and also by coaches to show live or recorded videos of a practice session for instructional purposes. Joel Kawachi, the Moanalua athletic director, briefly told Hawaii Prep World about the capability of the equipment during a state boys volleyball […]

Mann most improved, Hogland leads All-Defense

By Paul Honda on March 6, 2016

The opportunity to probe the minds of coaches and a few media about all-state selections is usually a mixed bag. Basketball, as much as any team sport, is about teamwork. Postseason individual honors are not. As much as some people believe that an all-state selection should or must be as close to a championship trophy as possible, it just ain’t so. Ernie Banks won a National League MVP award while playing for a last-place Chicago Cubs team. The debate about […]
