Hungriest No. 1 team ever? Kahuku routs Kalaheo

By Paul Honda on January 7, 2017

It was an astounding first 6 minutes for the Kahuku Red Raiders. From the opening tip until there was a little more than 2 minutes left in the opening quarter, Kahuku not only looked like an undisputed No. 1 boys basketball team in Hawaii, but played like they’ve been underdogs all season. All their lives. It was Kalaheo, ranked ninth after a few losses in preseason and OIA East play (to Kaiser) that had more to do with key injuries […]

Hogland stoked about UCSB opportunity

By Paul Honda on January 5, 2017

Not long ago, ‘Iolani’s Hugh Hogland was a tall, gangly kid who could barely make a shot. Then came years of a repetition, growth spurts and a love for basketball that has been exceeded by only one thing: his accomplishments. The 6-foot-9 senior and last season’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser All-State Player of the Year will get a chance to play at the college level, he said. “I pretty much committed to UC Santa Barbara,” Hogland said after the third-ranked Raiders toppled […]

Punahou overcomes Hendricken, Mazzulla for title

By Paul Honda on December 31, 2016

The Punahou Buffanblu saved their best for last in more than one way on Friday night. Coach Darren Matsuda’s squad played, perhaps, its best game of the season to pull away from Rhode Island powerhouse Bishop Hendricken 80-60 in the championship game of the Punahou Invitational. A crowd of about 300 was on hand to see Punahou get a stellar performance from senior guards Chris Kobayashi and Zayne Chong. After Chong scored all 14 of his points in the first […]

No. 1 Kahuku spoils Kailua’s best-laid plans

By Paul Honda on December 29, 2016

Walter Marciel would have made a great chef. People skills. Knowledge of his environment. Makes do with great or so-so ingredients. At Kailua, Marciel has superb ingredients this season, a mix of size, height, guards with offensive and defensive skills. When the Surfriders stunned defending state champion ‘Iolani in the semifinal round of the Surfrider Holiday Classic, it took awhile before it made sense. Kailua has just enough height and girth to give any team — even ‘Iolani with 6-foot-9 […]

Hawaii teams went 3-5 on the second day, with Kamehameha beating Damien 67-40. Punahou 65, Wilson (Ore.) 54 Chris Kobayashi hit five 3-pointers and scored 25 points as the Buffanblu blitzed […]

Punahou Basketball Invitational tips off

By Jerry Campany on December 27, 2016

The Punahou Basketball Invitational has begun, and will run through Friday. The Buffanblu, who won the tournament last year 68-54 over Kaiser, open tonight at 8 p.m. against Hamamatsu Tech. Punahou has won six of the last seven titles, with its only loss in that span coming to Kalaheo 41-40 in the 2014 championship. No. 2 Punahou will have plenty of competition in this one, with tournament mainstay Wilson (Ore.) looming in the second round if it can get past […]

Q&A: Kahuku G/F/C Samuta Avea

By Paul Honda on December 27, 2016

The road home has been a long, successful one for Samuta Avea. He grew up making long drives from Laie to town, playing youth basketball and showing the athleticism and skill set that made him, possibly, the most versatile homegrown player since Junior Ale. Since returning from a one-year stint at Bingham (Utah), where he helped the team win a state title, Avea has signed with Hawaii and is dealing with an offseason ankle injury that hasn’t fully healed yet. […]
