Kapolei finishes OIA West slate a perfect 10-0

By Paul Honda on January 25, 2018

For three quarters, the Kapolei Hurricanes did not allow a single offensive rebound by the Campbell Sabers. In a 61-51 win tonight to seal first place in the OIA West, No. 6 Kapolei showed what can happen with a healthy lineup. The flip side of that is this: in a showdown for first place, the Sabers actually hustled and got their hands on a bunch of potential offensive rebounds. They just didn’t secure the ball until the fourth quarter, when […]

When duty calls, Roosevelt’s Hathaway answers

By Paul Honda on January 24, 2018

Every morning, Mr. Hathaway sits there in his classroom at Alvah Scott Elementary School. Once in awhile, Steve Hathaway wonders how he got there. From Iowa to Hawaii, from schoolboy 3-point bomber to husband, father, coach. Make that coach in 3.5 worlds. Hathaway is now in his 15th season as varsity boys head coach at Roosevelt. He calls his Rough Riders just a team from a “little D-II program,” but the reality is that they’re talented, tough and more than […]

Boys make it No. 1 in both hoops polls for Maryknoll

By Paul Honda on January 22, 2018

There was more than the falling of one giant tree in this jungle. Maryknoll knocked off No. 2 Kamehameha and No. 1 Punahou in a three-day span this week. Today, coaches and media rewarded the Spartans with a No. 1 ranking in the new Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10. Maryknoll received six of the 10 first-place votes. This also means that Maryknoll has the top ranking in both boys and girls basketball polls for the first time in a decade. […]

Maryknoll blanks Punahou in final 3 minutes for win

By Paul Honda on January 18, 2018

Most leagues in Hawaii, at least in boys basketball, are fairly predictable. Occasionally, there’s some seismic activity, but the expectation is well formed in advance. In the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, where iron always sharpens iron, there is no mercy for the weak, no pity for the punchless. And No. 1 Punahou seemed to contradict everything known about the gauntlet. Until tonight. With a stunning 49-48 win over the Buffanblu in their house, No. 4 Maryknoll not only broke the […]

Pupule ballot: Dragons, Vikings, Warriors rise

By Paul Honda on January 18, 2018

Unlike the girls basketball ballot I posted, the boys didn’t have any major or middling upsets, so there aren’t any really seismic moves here. The state of teams battling for playoff byes and positioning, though, is a fascinating and wild ecosystem into itself. Who knows what will come next? Below, my ballot and extended list of top 35 teams. And please feel free to disagree — and post your top 35. Results and win-loss records as of Saturday, Jan. 13. […]

Kahuku’s Smith a McDonald’s nominee

By Nick Abramo on January 17, 2018

Kahuku big man Galen Tolu Smith was nominated for the McDonald’s All-America high school basketball game. Smith was one of more than 250 players across the nation who were nominated, but only 24 were eventually picked for the upcoming East-West all-star game. He did not make that cut. Smith is committed to play for Western Kentucky next season. The 6-foot-10 senior is playing for the Red Raiders for the first time this season after transferring from Bay Saint Louis High […]

Kaiser’s Yasue juggles 2 winter sports

By Nick Abramo on January 16, 2018

Varsity soccer is a major commitment of a player’s time and energy, and so is varsity basketball. So, Brandon Yasue is a pretty committed individual. The Kaiser senior athlete is a goalkeeper in soccer and a forward in basketball this winter, and time management is one of his priorities. “It gets stressful at times,” Yasue said on Saturday before a soccer match at home against Roosevelt. “I’m not going to lie, but if you have so much passion for both […]

Coaches, media make Punahou unanimous No. 1

By Paul Honda on January 15, 2018

For the fifth week in a row, the Punahou Buffanblu are No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10. It is the second time this season that Punahou is a unanimous selection by coaches and media. Punahou (20-1, 4-0 Interscholastic League of Honolulu) extended its winning streak to 14 games with victories over No. 2 Kamehameha (66-59) and Saint Louis (73-63) last week. The Buffanblu will host ‘Iolani on Tuesday, Maryknoll on Thursday and Mid-Pacific on Saturday. No teams […]
