The music plays on for clutch Monarchs

By Paul Honda on February 10, 2018

Amidst the adversity, the struggles and the distractions, the ballers in purple simply wanted a chance. In the three seasons since Damien last played in the boys basketball Division II state tourney, Coach Alvin Stephenson had known optimism well. This season, he could barely constrain his hopes and excitement. After a slew of injuries and mid-season suspensions, the Monarchs had destiny in their hands on Saturday afternoon. A win over University would yield a state berth. By the end, the […]

Some quick thoughts on the brackets that were released this afternoon for the Snapple/HHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships. Seeded teams 1. Maryknoll 2. Kalaheo 3. Lahainaluna 4. Kamehameha-Hawaii Not a surprise here. Maryknoll (25-4) has been dynamic against one of the toughest schedules in the state. In addition to winning the ILH championship — taking the regular season with a 9-1 mark, then capturing the league playoff tournament — the Spartans were 13-5 against Top 10 competition. Three of those […]

Discipline, efficiency and an OIA title for Kalani

By Paul Honda on February 8, 2018

He started basketball life as a Falcon, flew to Oahu from Maui, and wound up a Falcon again. Brandon Chung knows the rigamarole and routine well now. He also knows the warm and fuzzy feeling of being an OIA champion. The 6-foot-2 sophomore scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half to help lead Kalani over Roosevelt, 61-52, in the Division II championship game on Wednesday night at McKinley Student Council Gymnasium. That makes it back-to-back titles for […]

Chiu’s long-range 3 caps upset of Kahuku

By Paul Honda on February 8, 2018

If you are a Kahuku boys basketball fan, it may be best to stop reading right here. Unranked Kalaheo proved, with a miraculous 55-53 win over Kahuku in the Oahu Interscholastic Association championship game on Wednesday night, that in this league, it’s never how you start. Kalaheo not only learned to finish, the Mustangs finished strong with wins over two teams — Kapolei was the other one — that were previously unbeaten in league play. They did it with tough-nosed […]

By Billy Hull on February 7, 2018

Perez finished with 11 points and eight rebounds and Jaylen Cain led four Spartans in double figures with 16 points and sealed the game with two free throws with less […]

No. 4 Kahuku overcomes McKinley’s box-and-1

By Paul Honda on February 6, 2018

Kahuku advanced to the OIA championship game with a 56-40 win over McKinley on Monday night, but it was more than just a solid win for Kahuku. It was about patience. Dealing with walkers instead of runners. Kahuku (24-3 overall) could have tried more to speed the game up, but opted not to press fullcourt. They do more than enough, really, out of a rugged man-to-man defense. But the Tigers were not quite accommodating. Plan A worked to near perfection […]
