VIDEO: Mid-Pacific soars in the clutch over Moanalua

It was as close a battle as expected between Mid-Pacific and Moanalua. In the final eight minutes, the Owls of MPI soared for a 58-43 win in the opening round of the 20th Annual James Alegre Invitational at Radford High School. Colin Ramos scored 20 points and sophomore Elijah Kahue-Parker added 18 for the season-opening win. Owls coach Ryan Hirata chatted with Hawaii Prep World after the game. Honokaa honors Alegre, Ladra at the Invitational

Pre-game introductions at the Honokaa-Radford basketball game on Wednesday were a special treat for Dragons and Rams alike. At the James Alegre Invitational, Alegre’s alma mater, Honokaa, honored the late coach with a plaque on the 20th anniversary of the boys basketball tourney. Alegre was a star athlete at the school before becoming a teacher and coach at Radford, prompting a legendary career. The coach’s family was in attendance to accept the honor. The Damien Monarchs followed up last week’s triumph at the Pete Smith Classic by stunning Punahou 65-57 on Monday night in the final of the inaugural Damien Invitational at Bishop Scanlan Gymnasium. Jake Holtz poured in 24 points and Jydon Hall added 11 from the point as Damien outran Kalaheo 66-57 to capture the Pete Smith Classic championship on Wednesday night. Holtz, a 6-foot-3 junior who plays quarterback for the Monarchs’ football team, was a force in the post and in transition. Trayden Bayudan also chipped in 11 points while Hall controlled the tempo. Hall’s 25 leads Damien in upset of St. Francis

Lyndon Hall scored 25 points as Damien upset two-time defending Division II state champion St. Francis 74-60 on Tuesday night. Damien advanced to the championship game of the Pete Smith Classic and will battle host Kalaheo tonight.
