Hoopbook: Punahou champion, Kordel Ng, Classic moments

By Paul Honda on December 14, 2018

It’s Aloha Friday and I’m finally caught up. What does that mean? Between connecting dots and helping out on our All-State Football package which will come out Sunday, and covering as much girls and boys basketball as possible, there are plenty of takeaways to be made on roundball. And now that this head cold is clearing up, my brain is catching up, too. On Thursday, I was pretty sure it was Wednesday. And on Wednesday, it felt like Tuesday. That’s […]

Q&A: Stephenson on giant slayer Damien’s first loss

By Paul Honda on December 12, 2018

They were and they are, still, the giant slayers. Damien’s unbeaten run came to an end on Tuesday night with a 65-58 loss to nemesis St. Francis. The resume speaks for itself. Wins over St. Francis, Kalaheo, Punahou, Kailua. A 9-1 overall record. Not bad for a Division II program. Running the table in preseason would have been a simple, if enormously difficult, antidote to the naysayers who have knocked the Monarchs for declaring as a D-II team back in […]

Q&A: Durant on St. Francis’ ascent to tourney final

By Paul Honda on December 12, 2018

A year ago, it was St. Francis that rebuilt that unique template of what a giant slayer could be. In the 2017-18 season, Saints were unbeaten against all competition through preseason with the exception of two close losses to mighty Punahou, which went on to capture the Division I state title, and one to Kamehameha. St. Francis went on to capture its second D-II state championship in a row. The boys basketball squad made the long-awaited move up to D-I, […]

LIVE BLOG: St. Francis Holiday Hoops, semifinals

By Paul Honda on December 11, 2018

It’s been a flip-flop kind of day in the schedule here at St. Francis already. Because Kahuku and St. Francis are also playing concurrently in the Walter Wong Invitational, tournament officials swapped game times.
