Mater Dei begins hooping in ‘Iolani Summer League

Once again, California Interscholastic Federation powerhouse Mater Dei is in the islands for a summer trip. Mater Dei began play in the ‘Iolani Summer League on Wednesday and will continue to compete. The visitors have split their group into three squads. Mater Dei won a national championship in 2014 and has won 11 state titles, 23 CIF-SS titles, 16 Southern California regional titles and 34 league titles in the last 35 years. The 2019 class of the Hawaii High School Hall of Honor includes three elite level basketball players, as well as a good number of neighbor island standouts. Kalina Obrey of Kamehameha, the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball All-State player of the year, was voted into the Hall by the selection committee. It is no surprise that the Mid-Pacific Owls like what Ryan Hirata did over the last five years as boys basketball coach. Dan Hale is the new boys basketball coach at Saint Louis, replacing Sol Batoon, the school’s athletic department announced Monday. Hale has been coaching high school basketball for more than 25 years, including at Punahou from 2004 to 2007. During that time, Hale was the ILH coach of the year (2005) and led the Buffablu to the state Division I title in 2008 and a runner-up finish in 2007.
