Mater Dei begins hooping in ‘Iolani Summer League

Once again, California Interscholastic Federation powerhouse Mater Dei is in the islands for a summer trip.

Mater Dei began play in the ‘Iolani Summer League on Wednesday and will continue to compete. The visitors have split their group into three squads.

Mater Dei won a national championship in 2014 and has won 11 state titles, 23 CIF-SS titles, 16 Southern California regional titles and 34 league titles in the last 35 years. Coach Gary McKnight has an overall record of 1,167-117.


Junior point guard Devin Askew is ranked No. 15 and center Wilhelm Breidenbach is No. 37 in ESPN’s top 300 prospects in the class of 2021.

Thursday (Upper Gym)
6:45 p.m. — MD JV vs. Kaimuki

8:45 p.m. — MD V1 vs. Maryknoll


Friday (Lower Gym)
6:30 p.m. — MD JV vs. McKinley
7:30 p.m. — MD V2 vs. Mid-Pacific
8:30 p.m. — MD V1 vs. ‘Iolani

Saturday (Lower Gym)
6 p.m. — MD JV vs. ‘Iolani 2
7 p.m. — MD V2 vs. Kamehameha
8 p.m. — MD V1 vs. Hawai‘i Raiders

    They split the varsity into two teams and are going to play 4 days in a row (they don’t even do that in the NBA). Guys are going to get some minutes.
