Injuries hit ‘Iolani girls, boys

By Jerry Campany on December 18, 2009

By Paul Honda It’s still just preseason, but ‘Iolani’s boys and girls basketball teams have already suffered casualties. The girls lost standout guard Kylie Maeda for the season after she suffered an ACL injury to her left knee in the opening seconds of a game during last week’s ‘Iolani Classic girls tourney. The sophomore said she’ll have surgery soon, then have months of rehab work ahead. She expects to be back by next season. The Raider boys lost Kainoa Scheer, […]

Tautofi: Leavin’ Las Vegas?

By Jerry Campany on December 18, 2009

By Paul Honda Well, since the proverbial “cat’s out of the bag” at this point — another media source has noted that former Kaimuki athlete Desmond Tautofi may return from Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) soon — let’s discuss. I first got wind of Desmond’s possible return a few weeks ago. (So why not bring it up then? Remember, this is prep sports. When it comes to transfers and off-court issues, it’s usually best to leave it alone unless or until […]

‘Iolani Classic, day 2: Score updates, 11 p.m.

By Jerry Campany on December 18, 2009

By Paul Honda We’re still in the opening round. If that sounds confusing, just remember that this is a 16-team field, so the first round is split into two days. Why two days? Well, ‘Iolani School is still in session, so that limits the hours the gym is available. Besides, not everyone loves to travel all the way to Hawaii from Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland, Philly … and get stuck with a 9 a.m. opening-round game. Scores so far today… […]

‘Iolani Classic: First-day roundup

By Jerry Campany on December 17, 2009

By Paul Honda No doubt about it: Montrose Christian is powerful. Coach Stu Vetter’s team has a balance of size, athleticism and unselfishness that has marked all of the squads he’s brought to the ‘Iolani Classic. For a change, this might be the first Mustangs team that could win the Classic title. Montrose was one of the opening-round winners today. The remainder of the first round resumes on Friday starting at 3:30 p.m. Montrose Christian (Md.) 70, Kahuku 27 The […]

‘Iolani Classic, first round: ‘Iolani 68, Radford 39

By Jerry Campany on December 17, 2009

By Paul Honda Losses? What losses? The ‘Iolani Raiders, fortified by the return of four starters, zoomed past Radford 68-39 in the opening game of the ‘Iolani Classic this afternoon. ‘Iolani, which lost to Keaau and Hilo last week at the St. Joseph/Waiakea Invitational, had spurts of dominance, particularly in the first half. The Raiders’ man-to-man defense stifled Radford and forced 10 turnovers in the first quarter. Anchoring the Raiders through fastbreak flurries was center Josiah Sukumaran. The 6-foot-3 junior […]

‘Iolani Classic: Kinston (N.C.) is a sleeper

By Jerry Campany on December 17, 2009

By Paul Honda In the second game of the opening day, Kinston (N.C.) leads Tsinghua (Beijing) 34-22 at the half. Kinston is a sleeper, a first-time visitor to the ‘Iolani Classic. Four of the five starters are seniors, and that starting unit is pretty tall — 6-foot-2 to 6-7. North Carolina basketball writer Alex Bass says this could become Kinston’s best team ever. Reggie Bullock (No. 35), the Vikings’ 6-7 center, has committed to North Carolina. “Reggie could be the […]
